I sat down at an empty table in a corner, a few tables across from where Ally waited for this mystery man to show up. I smiled and waved when she looked at me and she smiled back. I was not looking forward to this. I just hoped that Ally got what she wanted by doing this. I don't know if this will solve her mother's issues but it could. Or it could just make the southern lady madder than hell.

A waitress stopped in front of me, blocking my view. I sighed and looked up into a pretty face, soft brown eyes watching me. "Sorry, I didn't mean to be rude."

Cindy, as her name tag read, nodded, "Okay, I accept your apology, cowgirl. Do you want to order something or just watch the lady behind me?"

I coughed, clearing my throat, "Excuse me?"

She pointed her pen over her shoulder toward Ally's table, "I saw you two together on my way in here. But then I walk in and you're here and she's there with a man."

I ignored the 'cowgirl' comment and I leaned to the side and peered around Cindy. There was a man there, sitting across from Ally with a huge grin on his face. I couldn't see my girlfriend's face but something about him looked familiar. I sat up, trying to collect my thoughts. Then Cindy cleared her throat and I looked at her to see her now grinning.

I huffed, "Don't you know it's rude to get involved in things that aren't your business?"

She chuckled softly, "Well, how else was I supposed to know if you were taken or not? I had to say something."

I frowned, "What do you mean?" I pointed toward Ally, "Are you askin' if she and I are together?"

"Well yeah. I mean, I don't know about you but as a lesbian in a small town, I have a hard time finding women to go out with." She glanced over her shoulder for a second, "Though, I didn't think she was gay."

I was unnerved by this woman's blunt words. As uncalled for as it was, it was oddly refreshing to hear someone just speaking what they think for once. But it was still uncalled for and this was her Ally that Cindy was talking about. I badly wanted to confirm that we were in fact a couple but I didn't know what to do because this was Ally's hometown and she wasn't officially out. And I couldn't just out her to someone who knows her.

So I lied, "No, we're just friends." Ugh. That hurt me to say. I was an openly gay woman and being with Ally made me want to show her off everywhere. But because she was closeted, I had to shove down those feelings and be her "friend." For the first time since all this began with Ally, I actually felt a little angry about it. I asked, "How do you know her?"

Cindy's smile grew, "She went to school with my sister. I've known her for a long time since I was a little kid really. Though, I did think she would be more like Jen, seeing as how my sister hates gay people."

I wanted to pop myself in the forehead at this being Jen's sister. What the fuck? I looked at her with a look of surprise, "You're Jen's sister? As in Ally's ex-best friend, Jen?"

"Ex-best friend?" Cindy asked, confused.

Before I could reply, another voice entered the conversation, "Cindy?"

Ally moved around Cindy, a mask of confusion on her face...and maybe a little angry or something? I only saw a flash of it before she turned to face the confused waitress.

"Hey, Ally." Cindy gave her a little wave.

Ally smiled and leaned in to give the woman a brief hug. "How are you doin', girl? You work here now?"
