4: Arriving in Canada

After he was knocked out, Milo woke up weeks later in the hospital. The very doctor who treated him agreed to a brief interview of what happened in the hospital. Luckily, he spoke English so we didn't need to translate anything:

"The police found him knocked out cold on a foreign trading boat and brought him here, to Mackenzie Health Hospital, Richmond Hill, Ontario" States Dr. Zhou. "He had suffered some terrible brain damage. Not very good for a 10-year-old developing brain but it was an easy fix. He didn't have any record of his parents and were could find out where he came from so we asked the orphanage, where he would be sent after, so paperwork for his surgery. 
When he woke up, a day before his surgery he was in shock I think, he started crying hysterically and refused to stay in bed and tried to remove his hospital gown. It was really hard to get him to settle down because we couldn't communicate, I've been travelling the world so decades, ever since I was around his age. I've worked with tons of foreign, non-English speaking Children before but I have never heard this language in my life. It sounded like a weird mix of Spanish, Arabic and Jebiberous."

Dr. Zhou writes down what he thinks Milo had said while crying, in phonetic English lettering:

Lo! lo lo lo lo! Era sigh-aton dyanna. Aifee Gay, es Ka-sigh-a nek? Aifee Grit? Gay shelee jiyum! Shelee jiyum jamour...es celda? Shelee Estahaque, Shelee Kasidi moie.

We have our Codesh speaking translates to try and decipher this message and translate it into English:

No! no no no on! It was a bad dream. Where's Gai, Is Cassiah here? Where's Mr. Gritt? Gaige my friend! My lovely friend. Is this prison? I deserve this, I regret so much (uwu).

"Once I finally got him calm and back in bed," continued Dr. Zhou. "I asked what his name was and where he was from as simply as I could. Smart boy he was, he understood what I was asking, at least the first part. He replied pointing to saying "Shelee Shayan Doena" I just assumed that Shelee meant I am or something."

It was later confirmed that he was trying to say "Shelee Shy-Man Dohna" which was the nickname he was given by Gaige and some of the only English he knew when he arrived.

"As the day progressed I kept talking to him and teaching him so words that he picked up fast. I starting to think he didn't need the surgery" joked Dr. Zhou. "Or maybe that's why he was so intelligent? Just kidding but by the time his bedtime rolled around he had already pointed to a Canadian flag in the room and said "In Canada now, with Tomatoes and Die-Annie eex!" whatever that means..."

Shayan's surgery was successful, he healed very fast and was discharged from the hospital on July 20th, 2018. He was then brought to an orphanage called, Children of Hope, in Toronto Ontario. Only days later he was adopted by a young married couple, the Souroushfar's. 

They lived in a suburban neighbourhood in Vaughan. For the remainder of the summer, Shayan was put into English classes so he could learn to speak which he did almost fluently by the end of August which his teachers and parents found extraordinary almost magically, this was proved impossible to learn a language in less than a month be many who've tried.

Somewhere between the time of being discharged from the hospital and getting taken into the Soroushfar household, Shayan decided it was best to keep Amalya and his past life a secret but after a house search for some of Shayan's old possession we found a diary where he wrote (in both English and Codesh) stories and letters addressed to Gaige Gritt, or as he wrote it, "Gai shelee jiyum jamour (Gai my lovely friend)." We explore this diary in later chapters (5, 6).

When Shayan wasn't writing in his diary, in English class or at home helping his chef dad prepare delicious tomato-filled dinners, he was with Dr. Zhou. His parents found out that Dr. Zhou and his two daughters live very close by. He would offend go over to have conversations with him or hang out with his eldest daughter, Catherine, whom he also got along with just fine.

In early September, right before his enrollment in a school called Bakersfield Public School, Shayan met a beautiful young girl named Jiya. She reminded him of Gaige, he wrote about it in his diary. She, too like Gaige, had long dark thick hair and dark brown eyes. They had a long conversation in the school park where Shayan opened up to her which he rarely did with anyone, even his parents. He told her that in his native lauganue, Jiya (Jiyum) meant friend.
