Last EpisodeThree years after coming from the neighboring island with a friend who had goaded him to invest into the corpa business had been profitably beneficial. His search for his sister and adoptive mother however came to a dead end. Some of their previous acquintances said that the pair went to try their luck in Manila, the capital city, while others remembered that his adoptive mother remarried and settled in the island of Panay.
But everything turned promising in the summer of 1925 for in his weekly jaunt to the mountains he encountered his true destiny, in the personification of a lovely young lady who ressembled not just his past memories of passion and ardent affection for the love of his life but all of its embodiment in totality. It did not take long for him to solicit his way into the trust of the reserved young woman who came from a family of Spanish descent even though their ancestry was far from being racially and socially congenial. It was not long ago when his ancestors were banished from the walled city of Intramuros and subsequently slaughtered by the Spaniards in vindication of their alleged monopolizing and control of trade and commerce in the subordinated dominion. But Chan Pek was unperturbed.
Through an acquintance he was able to establish his intention toward her and they finally were able to met in the town's public plaza albeit with a crowd of chaperons and close relations. Her name was Baldomera though friends fondly called her Be Rang.
She was my grandmother.In the summer of 1975 Chan Pek Chen aka Tomas Chiu died peacefully just as the Gods of Summer may have planned amenably.
