As soon as I closed my eyes in one world, I opened them in another. Not that I knew at the time. It was raining, which I suppose is to be expected in London. I was still in my nightgown, and I wasn't in my bed. most people passed me by as if I was homeless, as I was propped up against a lamppost on Baker Street, just as confused as those watching me. I knew where I was, so I started off towards home. everything seemed to be normal- and yet, somehow, not. not that I paid it any mind. Small, unnoticeable differences were everywhere, giving the place an eerie unfamiliarity. I finally arrived at my front doorstep, making note of the daisies in the place of our usual petunias. "Mum," I called out, bursting through the door, "I'm home! Oh, and I see you've been doing some gardening, were the petunias not- well?" My mum had entered the room and she bore an expression that was genuinely concerned. "Mum? What's wrong?" She mumbled faintly, " Who are you?" By then, I was scared. "Mum? Don't you recognize your own daughter? It's me, Evelyn!" "I have never had a child!" She didn't whisper anymore. " I have never even had a husband! " She opened the door. " Be gone with you!" She shouted. " I don't ever want to see you again!" She pushed me out and slammed the door behind me. I ran, without direction, so that no one would see me cry.
