Mahabharata - The Retold Story of Karna

Wonderful Surprise

A divine goddess sighs as she sits on her bed. Devi Sangya was feeling tired today and could not pinpoint why. She had been quite energetic this morning but suddenly it was as if all the energy had been sucked out of her.

A handsome man with radiance blinds any mortal walks in. Her husband, Surya Dev, sees that Devi Sangya looks pale and tired and asks her what happened.

"I am suddenly feeling very tired and faint," she replies.

Worried he asks a servant to go and call his sons, Ashwini Kumaras, the twin gods of medicine, health, and science. Surya Dev knows that if anything was bothering his wife they would be able to solve it.

Upon Nasatya and Dasra's arrival, Surya Dev explains the situation. They went to their mother and checked her pulse. After some time their faces brighten with smiles.

Confused by his sons' expressions, Surya Dev asks why they are smiling. The twin gods turn to their father and inform him of their mother's condition. They leave their parent's room afterwards. Upon hearing of their diagnosis Surya Dev's face also brightens with a smile. He goes to his wife and sits next to her.

"Did you here that Devi Sangya? We are going to have another child," Surya Dev said, his voice filled with happiness.

"Oh Arya, I am so happy. I will once again be able to be a mother. All my children have grown up and don't need me anymore but thankfully the Tridevis have blessed me with another child." Devi Sangya said with happy tears in her eyes.

Despite the happy news of the unborn child Surya Dev had a question. He knew only a few beings could answer his question and so decided to meet them. Before Surya Dev meet with them he wanted to ask for his wife's advice. He shared his doubt and plan with Devi Sangya and she agreed to his decision.

The next day Surya Dev and Devi Sangya went to Kailash, the abode of Shiva Dev and Parvathi Devi. Once there they asked Shiva Dev and Parvathi Devi their question. The couple said that they would answer their questions but asked them to wait for Vishnu Dev and Lakshmi Devi as well as Brahma Dev and Sarasvati Devi. Surya Dev and Devi Sangya agreed.

A few moments later Brahma Dev, Sarasvati Devi, Vishnu Dev, and Lakshmi Devi appeared in Kailash. They asked Surya Dev to repeat his question.

"Tridevs, a child of two devatas will be a devata as well. Why is another immortal being born?" Surya Dev asks.

"You are right. The child of two devatas can only be a devata. Your child will be a devata who will help being wherever they are needed. They will have powers equal to us and they will be the purest soul to have graced the universe. Your child will save Mata Prithvi from adharma and start an era of dharma if they succeed," Vishnu Dev said proudly.

Surya Dev was very happy that his child will be such a great being but Devi Sangya was feeling a little sad. Noticing this Parvathi Devi asked, "What is bothering you Sangya?"

"Mata Parvathi I am happy my child will be such a great person but I know they will have to leave me to accomplish their purpose. I don't want my child to leave me. I wish for them to stay in Surya Lokha with me," Devi Sangya cries.

"Sangya, do not worry. Your child will be with you and will be the most devoted child a mother could ask for. They will complete their duty but the conditions in which they accomplish their task will be later on in their life. We cannot reveal these conditions but know that your child will be strong enough to overcome everything and come back to you," said Parvathi Devi.

"What Parvathi Devi says is true. We will even be the gurus of your child so that he will be ready to face the obstacle in their life. Do not worry Sangya," Brahma Dev says.

"Thank you for your reassurances. My heart feels much lighter but I still cannot help but be worried," said Devi Sangya.

Surya Dev and Devi Sangya leave to Surya Lokha content with the answer they got. They are both excited to meet their child. The couple dream about how their child will look and act. They wonder what their child's likes and dislikes are. One thing was for sure, they would love their child beyond anything and would protect them no matter what.
