The wind howled loudly in Paul's sensitive ears.
It pushed through his fur as he and the others huddled in their spots to stay warm in the freezing temperatures. Every hour or so a few would get up and run a patrol on the off chance they got a surprise visit from the newborns. The cold air and harsh winds made it hard for them to pick up scents, even those as vile as the vampires.
Paul tried not to let out a grunt of disapproval when Jacob's wolf form disappeared from the group, they all knew he was going to see Bella. Paul snarled, baring his teeth at the treeline. He wanted nothing more than to be protecting his girl, holding her close in bed to keep her warm as the heater in the little home was on its last leg.
He dug his paw into the Earth, claws clenching as the frustration took over. He just wanted this to be over already. Paul didn't want to be there in the first place, let alone stand there in the blizzard while his imprint worried at home.
Every hour there'd be an update, Alice trying her best to see the newborns but as the time got closer, the harder it was to see due to the wolves starting to filter into the visions. One thing was obvious between the kinship her and Caylee had; they were both incredibly impatient.
Still, something was pricking it's way along Paul's spine, ruffling his fur and whispering in his ears. It wasn't just the wind, it felt like something else. He shook his head, peering over Jared's sleeping body beside him to see Seth shifting around nervously beside Leah.
Paul shoved Jared with his head to wake him up, Jared snorting grumpily as he sleepily traded spots with Paul.
Seth's soft brown eyes widened, watching as Paul's wolf plopped down on the snow beside him. It wasn't anything to get too excited about, Paul was simply watching out for the young boy because he knew Caylee would ring his neck if he didn't.
Paul? Seth's voice whispered in his head, as if they all couldn't hear him in their wolf form.
Paul grunted, looking over at him.
We're gonna be okay, right?
His question made Paul's ears perk up, and he sighed. Nudging Seth's fur with his snout.
Yeah, kid. I've got ya.
The morning came quickly, and all at once everything was in motion. The sun hadn't even begun to rise and there they stood, waiting in the treeline for the newborns to arrive. Sam had tried his best to give a hero speech, to gather them all together and let them know that this was to protect their family, their imprints, and their land. But he was no Captain America, and they were no Avengers.
When the signal rang out and the battle began, Paul felt like he wasn't even in control of his body anymore. The wolf took over him completely, ripping through the stone like newborns and tearing them to shreds. It was in their nature after all.
Still, all he could picture was Caylee, and it pushed him forward through the crowd of wolves and vampires, reminding him of is promise and how he needed to get home.
He was glad that Seth wasn't apart of this fight. He was too young to have to see all of this, to have to do all of it. Babysitting the lovebirds was a good enough job, though Paul knew Seth would take any job they gave him seriously.
A newborn moved quickly, trying to wrap his arms around Paul's ribs. He gave a squeeze, and Paul let out a yelp before Leah tore the vampire off of him. It hadn't been enough to break anything, but it hurt like hell. He'd definitely have a nasty bruise to hide later on.
He locked eyes with Leah, an understanding seemed to go unspoken between the two of them. She nodded, and he knew it was a 'thank you' for constantly looking out for her little brother.
