As I strolled along the path that led to the Skeld, the clamor of the crowd swelled with excitement. The spectators cheered fervently, eager to catch a glimpse of the twelve chosen individuals, myself included, embarking on a momentous mission to the uncharted planet called Polus. I had covered half the distance when I discerned hurried footsteps closing in on me from behind.

"Jason," I greeted, turning to face him. He saluted briskly and fell into step beside me, his breathing slightly labored.

"Velly," he replied, catching onto the camaraderie we shared. Straightening his posture, he walked a short distance behind me. As we moved away from the spotlight and the bustling crowd, Jason exhaled deeply and stretched his limbs. "I hate putting on a show like that." I chuckled and matched my pace to his.

"Well, you won't have to endure it for a while," I commented, and he shrugged nonchalantly. I patted his shoulder and leaned against the wall of the room. Surveying the faces of my fellow crewmates, each distinguished by the color of their suits, I sought familiarity among them. Lime, a trusted friend I had known since my early days at MIRA, stood by my side. Cyan, Lime, and I were the newest additions to this mission route, while the others had already embarked on shorter journeys before branching off to different destinations.

This route, often referred to as MIRA's highway, served as a launching point for numerous missions before diverging onto their specific paths. Our voyage to Polus, however, would entail traveling alone as we followed this highway until it led us to our ultimate destination.

We entered the seating area and took our designated seats as the door sealed shut, muffling the enthusiastic cheers from the outside. We patiently awaited the commencement of the launch that would propel us toward our new home on Polus. Suddenly, Commander White emerged from his seat, his gaze sweeping across the room, taking in each one of us.

Attention everyone, we will be departing Earth shortly. Please ensure that you are behaving appropriately," Commander White's voice echoed through the room. His eyes swept across the faces of all the people gathered, making sure to address each one before finally settling his gaze on me.

He approached, gesturing with his hand as he spoke. "This is Co-captain Red, and she will assume command of the Skeld in the event that I am injured or killed," White's words resonated with a resolute and unwavering tone.

Killed? I highly doubt that will happen.

"While there have been stories of individuals succumbing to the stresses of long-term space travel and turning violent, I have full confidence in the capabilities and professionalism of our crew. Is everyone present and accounted for?" White inquired, his eyes briefly glancing at the roster in his hand.

Commander White meticulously scanned the room, confirming the presence of all the crew members. His gaze lingered for a moment longer on Black and Cyan, as if silently conveying a message to them. Black was known to be a close friend of White's, while Cyan had earned a reputation for his exceptional skills as a security cameraman.

However, rumors had circulated that Cyan had narrowly escaped an infestation of imposters on a previous ship, an ordeal that had claimed the lives of many. Only three weeks later, the other survivor had gone on a murderous rampage, claiming the lives of 36 individuals before being exposed as an imposter and subsequently eliminated.
