In the end

Dead woman walking

      The cool rain hit my face as I walked through the forest. Angelica by my side as we look around for any animal to hunt. I've looked after her for two years but it feels like forever. We have trained together and are very skilled when it comes to combat and strategy. Our camp is in the middle of the forest where we stay hidden.
"Hey Tessa what if we don't find anything today?" She asks as she stops to stare at me. "Then we'll try again tomorrow." I say as I pick her hand back up and pull her along. "Ok but what if we continue not to find anything." She says as she turns to look away from me. "Don't worry about that your only 11 and I'm the adult here ok." I say as I stroke her hair.
It's blonde and very curly. She has blue eyes and pale skin. She's very skinny and fragile yet strong. But you can tell she's only a little girl. Where as I still have my bangs and my purple hair, which I dye with plants. All my piercings are still in which is surprising. I'm still a medium sized girl but I don't really care about my weight anymore.
I do care about Angelica though. She's 11 but is very skinny and all she does is worry about things she doesn't need to worry about. "I know but I just don't want to have to leave again." She says with a frown. "Hey cheer up ok, we were gonna leave sooner or later it was bound to happen." I say as I crouch down to reach her cheek.
I gently caress it and begin to walk with her hand in mine again. "I just wish we could stay in one place forever." She says looking down again. I sigh. I wish she could have had a childhood but that's a little hard in the apocalypse. Before I could say a word a twig snapping caught both of our attention.
I pull my gun out and push Angelica behind me. A single walker walks out and I instantly feel relief. I put my gun away and pull my knife out. I walk up to it and kick it in the knee. I here a snap as it falls to the ground and then I stick my knife through its head.
I walk back to Angelica and grab her hand. "Let's head back to camp it's getting late." I say as I take notice to the sun starting to set. We make it back to camp within a few minutes and I get the fire started. I cook some of the left over meat from the other night.
         We quickly eat and put out the fire not wanting to draw attention to us. I tuck Angelica into bed. We managed to find a tent and lots of blankets the other day which is good since winter is coming. I watch as she drifts into sleep and I watch our surroundings.
         I can't help but be paranoid about being watched, after all that is how most of the people I have cared about died. I let my mind wander. What would life be like if this shit never happened. What if I was still living in Ohio in an art school. I am 20 now so I would only have a few years left of college.
          I would probation be living in some apartment with my girlfriend or boyfriend and a cat. Life would be good. It would be normal. My mind wanders more and I try to fight off sleep. But maybe tonight I should let myself rest. Only for a few minutes.
         "Tessa....TESSA!" I wake up from the sudden intrusion of my sleep. "What is it Angelica?" I ask rubbing my eyes. "The herd is coming." She says and I jump up and start packing. "Go put the blankets and tent up." I say as I throw her the bag for it. I put all of our food, ammo, and what's left of the medicine in the other bag. We already have our knifes and guns equipped.
I throw my cloak on and Angelica throws her jacket on. I find a tree and I climb. I look out to see where the herd is and which way it's heading. I climb down and put on my bag. It's heading north so if we head north east then we'll loose it. "Tessa, I'm scared w-what if we don't escape this one." She says as she pulls on my cloak.
"Hey we've done this hundreds of times we got this ok." I say as I crouch down and hug her. "O-ok let's do this" she says as I pull away and stand up. "Stay close and don't fire your gun unless necessary and always always-" "go for the brain." She says before I can finish. "Alright now if we get separated take this flare and shoot it straight up and I'll come find you ok." I say as hand her the fare gun.
She was right this felt different I had this gut feeling that something bad was going to happen. I grab her hand and we take off. We only walk for now and run when necessary. I hear a scream behind us and I know it's getting closer.
I grip her hand and we begin walking faster. The night is dangerous so I'm trying to get us as far away from the herd so we can sleep and set up camp. We walk for what seems like hours until we find a near by gas station. We head in and I scope the place out.
It's clear so we head in and start barricading doors. I'm finishing up the last window when I feel something press against my back. I instantly know it's a gun and I put my hands up. I peak in the reflection through the window and see that he's alone.
I quickly turn and grab the gun. I aim it at his head when I hear another gun click. "Woah easy now or she gets it ok." I hear a man say as I turn slightly to Angelica. He's tall with black hair and a stubble. He looks about forty.
"What do you want?" I ask as I keep my gun pointed at the other man. "Well first I want you to lower your gun." He says as he motions to Angelica. I gulp and throw it down. "Good, now we can talk." He says with a smile.
"You have something I want, and I intend to get it." He says his gun still pointed at Angelica. "And what's that?" I ask my eyes never leaving his. "Her." He states. "Excuse me?" I say glaring at him.
"You see my group is quite big but we need more women and she's perfect and of course we want you too." He says clicking his tongue. "And if we say no?" I ask raising my eyebrow. "Well then we'll just take you by force." He says with a chuckle. "That won't be happening sorry not sorry but we'll be on our way." I say as I start to move forward.
"You take another step and I blow her pretty little head off." He says pushing the gun against her head. I put my hands up and I stop dead in my tracks. "I thought you needed both of us? " I ask as I cock an eyebrow. "One is good enough." He says with a sarcastic smile.
"Please just take me and leave her alone." I say as I try to plead with him. "Why do that when I could have both." He says waving his gun around. "R.J take her out." He says as he lowers his gun. It suddenly goes black. I wake up and I'm alone. I quickly sit up and notice my bag is gone but I still have my weapons. Those idiots.
I step outside and a green flare shoots up not to far west from where I'm at. Thank god. I quickly start running after them. I reach the forest and I stop for a moment to catch my breath and I start to feel dizzy. They really did a number on me earlier. I soon come up to them. Their stopped in the glade of the forest.
A big man hits Angelica across the face and she starts crying. I only have a few bullets since they took my ammunition. I climb up a tree near them and sit at a part that's near them. I pull my knife out and jump down on top of one of them.
I stab his shoulder and he lets out a scream. I get flung to the ground but I still have a good grip on my knife. "Dammit bitch." The man spits out as he grabs his shoulder that I stabbed. "R.J finish her this time." The guy says as he takes Angelica and they run.
I stand up and take both of my knifes out. I lunge at him but miss, he grabs my arm and flips me over his back. I hit the ground hard and run towards him again. I swing my knife towards his throat and he grabs my arm with one hand and stabs me in the side with his other hand. I push him off and drop one of my knifes. I hold my side and cough up blood.
"Is that all you got bitch?" He ask as he flips the knife in his hand. "I'm just getting started." I say as I pick up my other knife and charge at him. I notice some walkers appearing around us but it seems he hasn't noticed. I try to lead him closer to them. I swing hoping I miss and I do. I take my other hand and stab him in the stomach. He falls back and trips over a rock.
I watch as he gets ripped apart and I quickly leave. There are faint tracks from Angelica. She's been dropping flowers for me. We had picked them the other day. I almost pass out from the pain. I'm still holding my side trying to stop the bleeding but it's only getting worse. Not to mention more and more walkers are appearing.
I start to loose them and it only makes me push harder. I'm out of the forest but I'm surrounded. Walkers in every corner and their all coming for me. I take my gun out and start shooting I take like 8 out before I run out of bullets 'shit' I think to myself as I put my gun away. I pull out a different knife and start swinging.
I'm fighting off the urge to pass out so hard. I need to save her. I'm in control of my motions but I'm blacking out. It's like I'm not here anymore. Everything is starting to go blurry. A bunch of lights are shining and a bunch guns go off. I finally let myself fall. And it goes black.
