TK picks me up at a Seven Eleven gas station.
"Hey, what happened?" They look at my wild eyes as I sit in the passenger seat next to them.
I don't have the words to respond. Why am I reacting like this? There are too many new emotions, too much fear. It's impossible to form a sentence.
"Why are we in the middle of nowhere?" TK demands. "What were you doing out here?"
"I...Peter. I was with Pe—"
"Peter?" TK snaps. "Did he hurt you? Did he—"
"N-no—" I stop myself short. What I was feeling now definitely didn't feel great. But Peter didn't hurt me in the way TK assumed.
TK grips the steering wheel. The car idles in the parking spot. I don't think they're able to drive through their blind anger. Although TK's expression is drastically less intense, I'm reminded of the dangerous expression Peter had when I told him I was raped. I'm uncomfortable with anything reminding me of Peter, so I look away from TK.
"What the hell were you doing out here with him? Hoping to get killed?" They exhale sharply. "You barely know him!"
I shake my head. I can't handle this right now.
"What did he do to you?" TK's eyes bore into my skin, burning it.
"Nothing." Senseless thoughts race through my defective mind.
"Lills, I need some feedback here," TK says. "You're not okay, but he didn't hurt you? Then what happened?"
I fidget with the ring on my finger.
"I'm fine, TK," I say. Their concern makes it easier to center myself in reality. "Peter didn't physically hurt me or anything like that." He just told me he's in love with me. And I'm having a complete meltdown about it.
TK raises an eyebrow. "Then what is all this about?" Their anger fades into confusion.
I bite my lip. "He...said that he had feelings for me."
TK looks surprised. "Feelings? I thought you friend-zoned him."
"Ugh, don't say it like that," I wince. "I'm just not in a place to—"
"So you're saying if you were in a place for it, you'd date him?" TK's expression gets even more concerned.
"No! I'm not saying anything!" I run my fingers through my hair. "I didn't expect Peter to have feelings for me. When he confessed, I freaked out. That's it. That's what happened." My face flushes in embarrassment at this ridiculous situation.
TK sits back in their seat and smirks. "He pulled the L word on you and you panicked?"
I elbow them. "Fuck off." But I exhale, breaking some of the tension. I'm thankful for TK's humor. It makes things a little less intense.
They chuckle and rub their brow. "I thought he'd hurt you or something. I was two seconds away from calling the cops. Where the hell were you guys, anyway?" TK gestures around. "Doesn't seem like there's much to do around here."
"He lives near here."
"You went to his house?" TK shakes their head. "It's official. You have a death wish."
"I was visiting a friend! Get off my ass." I roll my eyes, but I'm smiling.
"You barely know him." TK gets serious again. "He could've hurt you if he wanted to."
