I roll out of bed at 11:30am. The chilly fall air leaks into my room through the window. I frown. I don't remember cracking this last night.
"Great," I mutter in annoyance. "This is gonna run up the heating bill." I slam the window shut.
After throwing on a hoodie and leggings, I shuffle out to the bathroom. Ugh, Lucy's in there. I knock on the door.
"Need it when you're done."
The door whips open. Lucy glares at me as she storms out. "Thanks for having my back last night," she snaps, coming out of the bathroom.
I cross my arms and quirk an eyebrow. "Yep. Thanks for paying rent."
She rolls her eyes. "I can't believe you! I've told you countless times I'm looking for a job, and to still contribute to the household, I've kept the apartment clean—"
I narrow my eyes. "You've been stashing your drugs in the furniture and doing the basic chore of cleaning up after yourself. Big deal."
"I am trying!" Lucy shouts, stepping closer to me. "You could at least support me!"
I jam my finger into her shoulder. "I am fucking supporting you. I'm the one paying for us to continue living here."
Lucy looks as though she's about to throw hands with me. I clench my jaw and step out of her space, not wanting to start a fistfight. I'd win, but that doesn't mean I need to push it.
"You keep the apartment clean, and I appreciate that," I exhale. "It's just that I'm killing myself to keep us afloat here. I can't afford to move right now, Lucy. And I doubt you can either."
Lucy closes her eyes for a moment and nods. "I get it. I'm really trying. Could I...use you as a reference?"
I had very little good things to say about Lucy, but I could slap on a cheerful face if it meant she'd start covering her rent.
I nod. "Yeah, you can count on me." She always does.
She gives me a strained smile. "Thanks, Lily."
I gesture to the bathroom. "You done in there? I gotta piss."
Lucy chuckles. "Yeah, I'm done. Are you going somewhere?" she asks.
I nod. "Yeah. I'm hanging out with a guy called Peter. We met a few weeks ago."
Lucy's smile turns devious. "Oh? Is he cute?"
I pause. Did I consider Peter cute?
"I don't know?" I rub the back of my neck. "I don't think about his looks. It's weird to rate people on their physical appearance."
Lucy rolls her eyes, but this time it's playful. "Oh, pull that stick out of your ass," she says. "I'm just asking if you're interested in him. You obviously think he's cute."
Was I interested in Peter?
"I...don't think so. I don't consider myself to be the dating type."
"That much is clear," Lucy mutters with a grin.
"Fuck off," I flip her off, but I'm smiling as well.
"So you two are just friends, then?" Lucy bites her lip, trying to hide her smirk.
"Yeah. We are," I say firmly. "I'm not looking for romance."
"Is Peter looking for romance?" Lucy tucks a strand of hair behind her ear.
I shrug. "What's it matter? I'm not." I walk farther into the bathroom. "Anyway, I gotta piss and get ready. He's gonna be here in fifteen."
Lucy laughs and shakes her head. "And it's not a date..."
I close the bathroom door, done listening.
