Mere mortals were never meant to control life and death, but even before she discovered she was The Rejuvenator, Amelia was still determined to at least try.

Military Outpost; [Classified Location] October 4th, 2029.

Dr. Amelia Von Durgen, 27, had received terrible news, her late Commander, Eduardo Rodriquez, 31, had been killed in the line of duty, shrapnel had been blown into his body, mostly into his brain. The explosion itself and the metal bits rendered Eduardo almost unrecognizable.

General Abbott, 73, had approached Amelia the next morning after the mourning ceremony.

"Dr. Von Durgen,"

Amelia faced him, "Mr. Overbeck,"

"I have a proposal for you," He took off his beret, and looked down at the ground.

"I want you to attempt to resuscitate Commander Rodriquez,"

"Sir, I had already looked over his injuries when the squad brought him in. He was already gone,"

"I urge you to try again. No matter what your budget would require, or whatever equipment you'd need, I'll get it. Please,"

He held her hand, and got on one knee, pleading for her help.

Amelia sighed, "Alright. I'll try..."

Later That Night

Amelia had received the body of Eduardo; it hurt her to see him like this, but if she had made scientific breakthroughs before, surely she would be able to at least try.

With her gloves, mask, and tools at the ready; she cut open his head to reveal his brain. She first had to remove all of the metal shrapnel that was in his head, which was no easy procedure, but she managed to remove them with some very precise and slow movements with forceps. She did a quick brain scan, so she could examine the patterns of his brain before and after the procedure. Amelia then made several, subtle repairs to the structure of his brain, such as treating lacerations and deformities.

She quickly activated the Cellular Regeneration Beam, and the opening she made on Eduardo's head quickly closed up and any cuts to the brain were healed. Appearance wise, it's like it never even happened in the first place.

Amelia had to think long and hard about the process. The medical devices that she had invented prior seemed like scientific miracles. The most powerful one, the Musculoskeletal and Nervous System Regeneration Handheld Scanning Device (S-Regen Scanner, for short) could only repair small to medium scale injuries. While the S-Regen Scanner could get the job done in just seconds, there was a design flaw that caused it to recharge after each use. Obviously, Amelia has never tried bringing someone back from the dead. Experimenting on people always felt wrong to her, so she never even bothered trying.

For the next few hours, Amelia worked without rest. She tried everything, and everything seemed to yield no progress at all. Amelia was frustrated, she held her head in her hands, but she didn't cry. In fact, Amelia was actually a bit angry. She felt as if she was having a massive migraine. The bright lights in the room didn't help either. Amelia didn't blame herself or anyone else for his death, she was just upset she couldn't save one of her closest friends.

She then thought of... a final course of action.

A few months ago, Eduardo and Nick came back from a mission with a vial containing the 'Z-Virus'. It was first made in Eastern Bulgaria using a rare flower to try and make humans stronger, but it managed to become exposed to the public before it could be properly finished and stabilized. The Z-Virus was a highly infectious mutagen that drastically speeds up the body's natural regeneration and metabolism, but causes unstable mutations within the body, so much so that some victims of it sprouted extra limbs and organs.

Humans and other animals who were infected by it could remain alive even if they were missing several vital organs, which is what got Amelia thinking about it in the first place.

Abbott had it delivered to her so she could either modify it and make a vaccine. However, The Z-Virus mutates so quickly, it's extremely difficult to manufacture a proper vaccine and even harder to test it.

After some consideration, she injected Eduardo with her modified version of the Z-Virus.

After a moment of complete silence, the monitor beeped... and then it beeped again.

Amelia looked in awe as she saw the slow rise and fall of Eduardo's chest. "Whaaa-" Eduardo said weakly, speaking as he inhaled oxygen.

Amelia assured Eduardo's well-being by putting a respirator on him and making sure his heart was still working alright. Surely enough, he had a slow, but steady heartbeat. She briefly turned away to contact Abbott about her discovery.

"Hello, Abbott? You need to get down here right now."

Sleepless Night

Abbott and some other doctors had taken over Amelia's duty and assured they would take care of him. He was able to answer simple questions, but he didn't move a whole lot from his seated position in his bed.

It had started raining outside, and Amelia was in her office, looking over the brain activity of Eduardo before and after she had performed the procedure on him.

Something wasn't right about them; When she performed another MRI scan on him when he was awake, they came back almost as if he was still somewhat dead. He was lacking brain activity in some areas of his brain.

Suddenly, she received an alert on her phone, which startled her.

"PATIENT IN CRITICAL CONDITION, ATTEND TO IMMEDIATELY - ROOM 206"

Amelia wasted no time. She dashed out of her chamber, and to Room 206. She practically busted down the door. All of the lights were off, and she could only see the shadowy silhouettes of the bed, medical equipment, and someone standing at the foot of the bed, eyes open wider than humanly possible.

A flash of lightning from outside illuminated the room.

Nobody was here.

Amelia's eye widened in horror. The window was shut and locked firmly from the inside. There was no apparent evidence that he had even left the room. She sounded the alarm, and alerted all other staff of a Code Green.
