Before you come for the fit I just want to warn you that this story takes place in 2015. I know it's cringey. Im not sorry.
I arrived at the college humor office in downtown LA with butterflies in my stomach. I stop walking just outside the door and look up at the building a moment before taking a deep breath. I then pull on the door to open it and nothing happens... So I push. Still nothing. What the fuck is happening? I try again to pull, then push still nothing. OK so the first day is not going great. Is the door locked? It's 3 PM, I don't know why they would be closed. I finally spot a small black box on the wall to my left. Right, I need an ID to get in. But I need to get in to get my ID. I hold my hands up, blocking the sun and push my face against the glass to see inside. Just a generic office lobby with stairs leading up to the actual workspace. Not helpful. And also empty. I sigh and turn my back to the building letting my shoulder blades bump against the glass as I lean against it.
"Well this is going swimmingly," I say.
"Is it now?"
Says a voice from over my shoulder. I turn my head and see a blaring white light. I squint and cover my eyes from the sun as I see a figure walking towards me and against the sun's glare.
"Im locked out." I confess, "I'm the newbie."
The person comes into the view and I see a smiling face. A friendly looking woman with blonde neat hair, glasses, professional slacks, and that cute shirt I saw at target the other day.
"I'm Siobhan. nice to meet you."
She reaches out a hand.
"Libby."
I shake her hand. Siobhan's smile widens and she almost giggles to herself.
" I got locked out on my first day too," she says, "I feel like there should be a way for new employees to get in without a badge, right? It doesn't make sense that you need to go inside to get a badge but you can't get a badge if you're outside."
" I was just thinking that!" I smile
"Lucky for you," says Siobhan, "I can share mine." She pulls a small ID out of her purse and touches it to the black square next to the door as I hear a click. She leads me inside and up the stairs to the workspace I have seen many times before from my laptop screen. Seeing the look on my face Siobhan asks
"Are you a fan?"
"Of coarse! Speaking of, women's winter is no joke around here." I tell her, pulling a sweater out of my bag. She smiles to herself.
" I actually helped write that."
"Really? I kind of assumed it was Katie Maravich." You were tempted to do just a first name.
"It's weird. I feel like I simultaneously know you but I don't?"
"Well that's an easy problem to fix," she said. Siobhan leads me into a conference room in the corner and I look around to see the cast I've gotten to know through the internet. Siobhan introduces me as the new intern and they go around the table and introduce themselves in kind. Mike, Rekha, Alli, Grant, Zac, Raph, Emily, Murph, Brennan and at the head of the table, My boss Sam Reich."Hi everyone," I wave awkwardly, "I'm Libby, I'm the new intern."
"Oh cool!" Says Brennan "What for?"
"I'm an illustrator and animator so I'll be helping with... that." Wow Lib this is going really well, I think to myself.
"The cast give a chuckle and continue their meeting. They go on about the budget for a while although I am not really listening. As I sit in a chair off to the side away from the conference table, I can't help but stare at the people around me. My coworkers now I suppose. They're turned away from me focusing on the task at hand. As I survey the room and chastise myself for being awkward and making a weird first impression, my gaze snags on Brennan's arm. Does he... work out? I did not peg him as a particularly fit guy but as he fidgets with a pen, his elbow resting on the table, I'm transfixed on his bicep. I tear my gaze away, reminding myself I am merely a lowly intern and this man is... not exactly my boss but in many ways my superior. As I turn away I spot two people hovering just outside the door. I assume they're waiting for a moment to enter without interruption so while a Sam transitions to a presentation projected onto the wall, I quietly open the door and usher them in. They sit in the two chairs next to me and exchange frantic looks. Noticing their discomfort, I lean over and whisper an introduction.
"Hi, I'm Libby, I'm the new intern."
"Wait you're new too?" Asks the man with a rounded face and trendy glasses.
"... um yeah?"
"It's our first day, we weren't sure where to go." Whispers the girl with pink hair.
"I'm Lilly by the way."
"I'm Tao." Says the man.
"Should we be having this conversation here and now?" Lilly asks, gesturing to the meeting at the table.
"We're just interns I don't think they care about what we do yet." I point out.
"I hope we're not interns for long." Says Tao. "I'm hoping to move up to cast member." "Aren't we all." Says Lilly.
"I actually want to be a producer." I whisper quietly.
"More of a behind the scenes gal?" She asks.
"Sort of. I do enjoy performing but I don't act."
"Drums?" Tao asks wit a grin and finger guns. I cock my head.
"No? I'm a singer."
"Ah... for some reason you seemed like a percussion person." Taos finger guns fall to his lap.
"I'll take that as a compliment I guess." With that, we turn our attention back to the meeting just as it wraps up. Sam dismisses the cast and as they file out of the meeting room they all politely say hello to us. Brennan is the last to get up after gathering his things.
"Oooo, hey Brennan, this is Elizabeth, Lilly, and Tao. Will you show them around? I'll hook them up with their trainers once they're all set up at their desks."
"Will do."
Brennan affirms, grabbing a travel mug and leading us toward the door.
"Hey gang! Sorry you guys had to sit through that meeting. We were supposed to wrap up before you got here but clearly we ran long. Anyways, here's the office." He gestures around to the large space with rows of desks.
"Open floor plan."
Lilly comments.
"The bullpen." I mumble to myself.
"Well.. yeah," says Brennan, "I guess a bullpen is any work space not divided into offices. Although for some reason I associate a bullpen with an editor in chief.I mean we are technically a publishing company." He furrows his brow in thought.
"Oh I don't know what I'm talking about," I clarify "I just watched The Bold Type on Hulu."
"Ha!" He lets out a laugh. "That's the one about the CEO of cosmo magazine right?"
"It's actually about three assistants." Clarifies Lilly.
"Well actually they started as assistants but the show takes place after they've been promoted." Says Tao
"It's very sex in the city." I chime in.
"Huh." Says Brennan. "Never seen it."
"You don't strike me as the coming of age type." Lilly says.
"He's a black mirror guy. Crypto?" Says Theo, this time with just one finger gun.
"You're both wrong." I say confidently "he's a high fantasy guy. Doctor Who and Lord of the Rings all the way."
"Doctor Who isn't fantasy." Lilly points out.
Just as I'm about to defend my argument Brennan holds up his hands in surrender.
"Alright I'm a big nerd." He smiles. "Now let me show you the break room."
