I did my homework.
Sleep didn't come to me as I'd hoped it would, instead I spent the late hours of the night staring at the ceiling. My flip phone provided me with no entertainment, and criminal minds didn't appeal to me as it usually did. Around 2am, my backpack slumped on the wall caught the corner of my eye.
Before I knew it, I was finishing missing assignments that had been lost and crumpled up in my backpack. Spanish, calculus, history. I was surprised by how much I knew on my own without looking at notes. More than that, though, I was surprised by the fact that I was doing homework, and doing it well. By the time 6am rolled around, I had finished a total of seven assignments.
Feeling proud of myself, I decided to take a shower and really take the time to wash my hair properly as well. Maybe I wasn't such a lost cause after all. It felt good to feel the warm water enfold me and rinse the stress, worry, and unhappiness from my body. Something about today made me feel different. I felt productive and bold, like I could do anything.
In school that day, I remained focused in my classes thankfully. It was a change to be actually mentally present in school, but it felt good. It felt like I was doing something. Why was I so different today, though?
Before I could come up with an answer, a shoulder collided with mine, sending my phone that was in my hand flying to the ground.
"Oh shit, I am so sorry." The guy I bumped into said, kneeling down to pick up my phone. It was Nick, the football player everyone loved.
"It's fine." I walked away, but he grabbed my arm.
"Wait, Andy. I know we haven't talked much but I was hoping to get to know you a little."
"Why?"
He seemed taken aback by my blunt question, "You just seem cool and I've never really talked to you."
"Okay."
I was aware I was being a bit difficult, but I didn't really know how to talk to this guy. I knew how to talk to Techno and to Jaime, but I didn't know the type of person Nick was.
"Well, uh...are you going to the game on Friday?"
"No. I don't -"
"Of course she is!" The voice of my gold star best friend chimed in, shaking me by the shoulders, "What kind of best friend would she be if she didn't come to watch me?"
"Jaime you're guilt tripping me."
"Is it working?"
"No."
She laughed, "But she is still coming, Nick. You guys should hang out afterwards!"
Nick smiled, "I'd be down."
I shot her a discreet glare, "I'm busy Friday night."
"Yup, busy hanging with your best friend and new friend Nick!"
As much as I wanted to argue, I figured I was in a tough spot considering Nick's excitement and Jaime's nails digging into my skin. I wasn't stupid - she clearly wanted to set me up with Nick for whatever reason.
"Fine."
Nick seemed somewhat displeased by my monotonous reaction, but Jaime knew that was how I usually was and squealed with glee.
"All right, I'll see you Friday then. Bye, Andy."
"Bye Nick!" Jaime said, giving me a nudge, waiting until he walked away to whisper "Spare him some sentences, please?"
