A Christmas After Mess

It had been a few days since Christmas. Maya had spent every night falling asleep next to Carina after they had read a story and tucked Melody in. every morning Carina had woken with a mess of blonde hair in her face. She would gently brush it behind the other's ear before leaving a kiss on the woman's forehead.

The days had been spent watching tv playing games and watching Melody enjoy her new toys. They had settled into a sweet little bubble but both knew it couldn't last forever. Maya was at the sink washing the dishes from breakfast when Carina came in and hopped up onto the counter next to her. A move Maya was certain she had gotten from her.

"I would like to take you on a date, Bella, a real one" the brunette told her.

"I would like that but what about Melody"

"Amelia is off tomorrow night, she said we can cash in that part of the present"

"Oh um yeah, I just, I have to check with Melody, she's never been away from me much" Maya said.

If the blonde was being honest she was absolutely sure Melody wouldn't mind at all. She had liked the couple once she warmed up to them and she loved playing with Scout. It was Maya who was unsure, she loved Carina but a date in public especially without Melody would make this real, more real and Maya was scared.

"Of course" was the reply "do you want to go ask her now?" The teacher asked.

"Not yet" the blonde said a little to quickly

But the other dropped the subject, jumped off the counter, kissed Maya on the cheek and headed off for the couch.

Carina had watched as maya finished the dishes and then headed toward the bedroom. She had been concerned but then heard the shower start so figured everything was ok.

"Rina" Melody said

"Si bambina"

"are we doing anything for New Years" the child asked

"I'm not sure, the hospital normally hosts a party for the doctors and their families, and I'm still invited, but I don't know if your mommy has other plans"

"Oh I don't know we watch fireworks mostly, the two of us"

"Fireworks are pretty"

Melody smiles at her and goes back to playing as Carina mindlessly flips channels on the Tv. She notices she hasn't heard the shower in a while.

"Is mommy ok"

"I'm not sure, but I'll go see" Carina told the girl she set the tv to cartoons and walked down the hall she was surprised to find the door to what had now become Melody's room closed. She knocked gently.

"I'll be out soon" Maya called but Carina could hear in her voice the woman had been crying.

"Mai it's me, please can I come in"

"I'm ok, be out soon" she tries again but it's even more of a struggle than before.

Carina tries the door and when it opens she's met with a sight of Maya on the floor in a towel, her eyes and cheeks red and tear stained. Carina runs to her.

"Oh, Bella what's wrong, I'm sorry if I said something"

Maya looks at her and more tears fill her eyes seeing the worry on the others face. Panic sets in for the blonde and she knows she just needs to get out, she thought the shower would help the thoughts on her head but it didn't. She looks into those brown eyes and quickly stands up nearly knocking the teacher to the floor.
