Seeing Wilbur in class was strange. Seeing him anywhere was strange. Strange mostly because of the way we interacted, but never really interacted. Whenever we passed in the halls we would lock eyes and smile, like we knew each other. But we didn't know each other.

He waved to me a couple times, and I waved back, but I never really knew what it meant. After I learned his name, we didn't talk for a while. It was always just little nods and slight smiles and awkward eye contact. That or it was entirely one-sided. Just me watching him in class. I started to memorize his tendencies.

Whenever he adjusts his glasses, he pulls them slightly down, and then pushes them back up. When he gets nervous, he taps his foot on the ground and runs his fingers through his hair. And he writes fast. Really fast. I see him writing all the time, filling his notebook pages top to bottom with words, and he does it so quickly.

After that I started to wonder how long he had been watching me, and if he had any of my strange mannerisms memorized. It sounds weird to say I've been watching someone. But it's more like a... mutual watching.

...no that sounds weird too. It's not as weird as it sounds I promise. This isn't helping my case is it? Whatever it doesn't matter. The point is that routine, of us looking at each other and nothing more; it changed today.

I was at my locker at the end of the day, collecting my stuff, getting ready to guess whether or not I needed to walk home, the usual. I turned around just in time to see Wilbur looking at me. He smiled, and I smiled, just like we always do, but before I turned back around, he started walking towards me. I closed my locker just as he made his way over to me.

"H-Hey!" He said, trying to mask his very obvious nervously. I just smiled.

"Hey! I remembered your name! Wilbur, right?"

"Yep!" He laughed nervously. It sounded disheartened.  "I wanted to ask you something."

"What's up?"

He hesitated.

"Uh- well, I was just wondering if- maybe, you wanted to go... do something... sometime?" He was so quiet and uncoordinated, nothing like how he was in class. I couldn't help but chuckle a bit. This only made him more tense.

"Do something?"

"Uh yeah- y'know, just... hang out or... something."

"Like what?"

"Um..." it was becoming increasingly obvious he didn't think this through. "I-I dunno whatever you want." I took a second to pretend to think about it. Not like I had any other plans.

"Hm... alright. But I'll need your number."

"Eh- er- what?"

I laughed.

"So we can plan it, dummy."

"O-Oh! Of course, yes." He took his phone out of his pocket and handed it to me. Instead of bothering with juggling two phones at once, I just decided to type my number in. My mom had made me memorize it, still no idea why. I passed it back to him with a smile.

"I'll add your contact when I get home."

His face lit up and; I hate to admit it, but it was adorable.

"Great! Great, that's perfect!" He hurriedly shoved his phone back in his pocket. "I'll uh- I'll text you later and we can talk about it."

"Sounds good to me." I turned to leave. "Talk to you later!"

"Mhm!" I heard him release his breath as I waded through the sea of people that filled the hall. It was strange. The way he talked to me. Whenever he talks in class, and when he tutored me, he's so confident and firm and dramatic. Dramatic especially. The second he'd say anything you could tell he was a theater kid.

But when he talked to me, outside of teaching me, just talked to me, he was a completely different person. Quiet, nervous, stumbling over his words. Maybe it's because he doesn't know me too well. But I can't help but feel like he doesn't act that way around anyone else.

What's so different about me?
