The beating in her legs did not stop when she got on the bus to get home and it did not stop even when she laid in her bed. The sickening grasp of the hooded man, the bruises that contorted her limbs from the jump, the aching fear in her bones.. The damn headache that still hasn't gone away. She took a pain reliever in hopes for it to die down but it never did, seemingly a permanent stain on her mind, like a dying animal refusing to see the light. She huddled over the toilet throwing up her breakfast and shaking so hard one would think she was freezing cold. She turned the shower on. She smelled like garbage. People on the bus looked at her in disgust from how bad she smelled. The combination of sweat, throw up and hot trash leaked off her body like toxic waste. She couldn't move any further. Taking off her damp clothes, she put the tape and Sam's drawing on the sink. She laid down in the shower, the hot water simmering her skin as she gently cleaned herself. Bruises were all over her aching body. She wondered if she should go to a hospital.. But she did not want to explain to her parents why she was in the state she was in. Her mother coldly stared at her through the cloud of a cigarette and paid no further attention to her trudging up the stairs. She was in the shower for maybe forty minutes, until the water got too cold and her burning body could no longer take it. She made her way to her room and searched for her old camcorder. After finding it in boxes stored away underneath her bed, she plugged its charger in and waited for a response. As she waited, she looked at the old tapes she used to make as a kid. She would go places and record, anywhere really, pointing a camera at everything and anything she could without getting into too much trouble.
As she waited, her phone buzzed. She picked it up to see an unknown number calling her. She did not pick up her phone to see who it was.
Promptly after hours of sleeping, she decided to finally look at what's been right in front of her. Seeing her phone, she had several missed calls. She slid the tape cartridge into her camcorder. Surprisingly it fit. Surprisingly, it played.
A man walked on the side of a train track. Every once and a while, he looked back. He was wearing a red flannel and had black hair. She couldn't tell if it was just the quality of the tape but he looked quite pale. The camera cut off and was reintroduced to the entrance of a building. "So what do you think of this place?" The cameraman asked. The man with the black hair shrugged. He was now smoking a cigarette.
"Hell if I'd know."
"Aw, c'mon, bud. Lighten up for me, sweetheart." The man with the black hair gave him a questionable look. "Should be fun, yeah? We're just scouting areas right now."
"Right," the raven hair man replied. "I'm not really into these kinds of places. Gives me a bad feeling."
"Don't worry son, I'm here to protect you!" The cameraman put a hand on the man's shoulder, but he shrugged it off.
"You're starting to weird me out. Don't think just 'cause we're alone you can hit on me."
"Shh, I'm still recording!"
"Yeah, evidence of how much a freak you are."
"I'm not a freak."
"Tell that to the girls on campus."
"Huh?" The cameraman replied. "C'mon, the ladies love me. Undeniable fact."
The man with the black hair shook his head. "Let's go. It's gonna get dark soon-" He flicked his cigarette on the ground and stepped on it.
"Oh, you fuckin' degenerate. You're littering. Good job, Tim. One cigarette away from killing us all off."
"Alex is gonna chew your stupid ass out for wasting his damn film." The cameraman turned the camera to himself. He wore a stupid grin and glanced repeatedly to his friend, Tim.
"I'm gonna chew on Alex's ass in general."
"Brian, for fucks sake!"The camera cut out and suddenly they were in a dark corridor.
"I don't know why he wanted us to come all the way out here for some fuckin' movie. Seems like a waste of time to me, especially if he's not even here." The man 'Tim' walked ahead with a flashlight, looking around. The gesture reminded her of the masked man she saw in the abandoned hospital. "Yeah, well.." Brian trailed off. He stopped and zoomed in on a used condom that was on the ground. "Haha. Tim, look." He flashed the camera to Tim, who looked disgusted. "You and Alex come here before me?" Tim scoffed.
"It wasn't me who came."
"So you took it in the ass? Alex, my boy! AHA! TIM!"
"Brian, shut the fuck up."She found herself laughing at the commentary between the two. She wondered why she'd been threatened for this tape. Watching it made her feel like she was doing something wrong. As she watched them stroll silently through the building her phone rang again. Fear crept into her chest as she saw the unknown number ring, and ring, and ring..
The camera cut off and resumed to a fast paced speed. "Tim!" Brian screamed. "TIM! WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU!?" She suddenly felt the fear of knowing why she shouldn't be seeing this film. "Fuck, fuck, fuck.." He stopped running. The camera shook anxiously as he caught his breath. From the angle of the camera, she could see the long corridor. The thing staring at the camera. Static began to flood the senses of the recording and she heard screaming. Crying.
The camera cut back on. She could see they were no longer in the building. Instead, they were in a living room. "No, Alex. I'm not doing this shit with you. Tell me why the fuck you told us to go there." It was Tim speaking, more like yelling. The camera was facing up to the ceiling as the conversation happened, and Brian adjusted it, his face slipping on screen. "I wanna know what the fuck was in there and what happened to me and Brian afterwards. Are you fucking with us?"
"Tim, I don't know what you're talking about." She assumed that was Alex speaking. "Have you been taking your meds?"
"Fuck you, Alex, and fuck your shitty ass project."
"I don't know what the fuck that was, Alex. One of your kinky fuckin' friends all dressed up like that? Is that what you get into on the weekends? We saw the condoms." Brian said, almost as if he was trying to be serious. Tim turned around to him like he was a fucking idiot and Alex ignored him.
"Look guys, I seriously don't know what the fuck you're talking about and I'm sorry you had to go through that." The audio started to cut out and become distorted. "I have never seen whatever the fuck you're talking about but honestly if it fucked you up that bad, maybe we should go to the cops. What if he was a serial killer?"
"No- Fuck. It wasn't a fucking guy-"
"You said he was wearing a suit?" Alex interrupted Tim.
"I know what I fucking said! But it wasn't what you think it was!""I- I know Tim, I'm sorry." Something about his tone truly sounded disingenuous. "What do you want to do? Do you want to go back there?"
"So you can fuck the weird suit guy next? Nope. I'm out!" Brian turned the camera to himself and held up a peace sign.
"Alright, can somebody tell me what the hell Brian is talking about?" Alex complained.
"It doesn't fucking matter. There were condoms on the ground- probably some fucking high schoolers or something.."
"Exactly, there's a bunch of crazy fucking kids going in and out of that place, I'm sure some of them just wanted to mess with you guys. Next time we go, I'll come along.."Her phone buzzed once again. She hit pause on her camcorder and picked up the phone to see her mother calling. "Hey, something came in the mail for you."
It was a white envelope with only her name on it. Something heavy was inside. She ran up the steps and ripped it open. It was her wallet. She froze in fear. Opening it she found everything, her ID, her license.. Which all had her personal information. Everything besides the twenty dollars she kept in there. The bad part? There was no return address. Not even her own address. The even worse part? The small note that was left where her money should've been.
"NICE ASS"
She didn't know what the hell to do.
Someone brought this to her front door personally.
After thirty or so minutes, the number called again. Finally she picked it up.
A gruff voice awaited her on the other side of the line.
"Finally ready to talk?"
