Emmeline sighed as she threw a crumpled piece of parchment out of the window, Filch be damned. She was too knackered and frustrated to care about that cranky, old caretaker whose only job was to make the students' life as miserable as he possibly could.
She was generally pleasant (who was she kidding? There were many words that could be used to describe Emmeline Vance but 'pleasant' was definitely not one of them) but Filch had made her clean every award and trophy in that big arse Trophy Room for her detention, and honestly, all her muscles were so sore that she could pass out right now, where she sat in a secluded corner of the library.
She picked up Regulus' Potions notes, which he had lend her before she could even ask for them, god bless his soul, and started to skim through the important parts so that she could at least score an Acceptable in the next day's test. She again cursed the sodding muppet of a caretaker for eating up her precious evening time when she could have studied for this test. She mentally aimed a few colourful words towards James Potter too for winning one too many Quidditch trophies and hence, increasing her work.
Emmeline usually regretted receiving any detentions at the end of the day, but, surprisingly, this time she couldn't summon even an ounce of shame. Those Gryffindor girls had deserved the jinxes that she had graced them with for they had wrongly accused Reg for hexing one of them. Emmeline had been with him at that time and he had done no such thing, instead it was that git Mulciber who was to be blamed. And Emmeline had tried her best to make them realise the truth but those daft bimbos were too interested in blaming Reg to use their mind, though she doubted if they even had one in the first place.
So, Emmeline, who was known for her short temper, had targeted them with some well aimed Furnunculus jinxes. She smiled as she remembered the sound of their squeals of terror when pimples had started erupting all over their faces. Her smile faded as she was reminded of what had happened after. Conveniently, McGonagall had chosen just that moment to make an entrance and she had caught her red-handed in the act of jinxing 'innocent Gryffindor girls who had been unlucky enough to be victims of my foolhardiness', McG's words of course. Emmeline had always been a bit sceptical of McGonagall because she had the feeling that the professor hated Ravenclaws a bit for being the wise, intelligent ones and leaving her with the dumb Gryffins. Ha, what a shame.
Anyway, McG being the lovely lady that she is, note the sarcasm, had granted Emmeline a detention with Filch of all people. Come on, those girlies weren't even that hurt. Poppy had fixed them with a single wave of her wand.
Emmeline sighed as she focused her thoughts on the parchment in front of her. She couldn't afford to fail on this test. Her grades had been visibly declining this year what with all the extra workload from being a Prefect as well as playing for the Ravenclaw Quidditch Team. She had been so engrossed in thinking about getting her life back on track that she didn't notice Regulus creep from behind her and whisper a soft "Hey," in her ear.
"Blimey," Emmeline jumped from her chair in surprise and brought a hand to her hand as she tried to calm her breathing, "give a girl a heart attack, why don't you?"
Regulus barked out a laugh. What a git.
He pulled up a chair beside Emmeline and straddled it as his eyes scanned her body from head to toe. He focused his gaze back at her eyes and said, "You look like shit."
Emmeline nodded in agreement, "I know. Although, there's no need to point it out like that. You try going through a Filch detention over all the stuff that I already do. Ugh, I just want an apple pie with whipped cream and some bloody sleep. Is that too much to ask?"
Regulus smiled and pulled out a packet thingy from the inner pocket of his Slytherin robes, "Your wish is my command." He opened that packet and, oh god she loved him so much. He had brought apple pie for her, for Merlin's sake. It looked fresh and it had whipped cream layered on top-
Wait. What?
No.
No no no no no. She did not just use the L-word. No. That word was off limits when it came to Reg. Emmeline did not love Reg like that. He was her best friend, yes. He was the best-est (um? Ravenclaw? Pfft) best friend that anyone could hope for. And that's where the line was drawn. No feelings. No emotions whatsoever. Ew. Pathetic.
She looked at the apple pie in her hand and then at Reg. He was staring at her with an unexplainable look in his eyes. Emmeline raised her eyebrows, took a bite of the apple pie - if that wasn't the most delicious thing she had ever tasted - and then smiled while pointing a thumbs up at Reg, "Fank bu." She had meant to say 'Thank you' but oh well.
"When we are on the topic of thanking each other," he smiled, "I should get on with it too, I guess. Thank you, Em, for sticking by my side during the whole ordeal. I didn't need help, though, I could have dealt with them on my own —"
Emmeline scoffed, "As if."
"Will you let me finish? I am trying to be sentimental here."
"Continue."
Regulus took in a deep breath and resumed, "Yeah so, thank you. No one has- no one has ever taken my side like that, without any hesitation or second thoughts. You already know how things are at home, right? And those Slytherins that I am 'friends' with? They are all around me just because they're afraid of my mother. I want you to know that- that even though it might seem like I ain't comfortable around you or something, I want you to know that I am. I am more grateful for your friendship than anything in my life. I don't know where I would've been without you, Em. You're the most amazing friend anyone could ask for and I am lucky enough to be that anyone," he smiled as he finished.
Oh.
A friend then. Just a friend.
Emmeline wanted to think about it. She wanted to think about what he had just said and how her heart has fallen for him. She wanted to think about the fact that her life was turning into some stupid unrequited love story. But, she couldn't. At least, not now. She wasn't ready to think about all these complications because she herself didn't know what was going on. So, she did the only thing that she had always been good at.
"I, erm, need to go. To- to the lavatory, yes. I'll- I'll see you later," she fumbled for her stuff and shoved it all inside her bag, she was pretty sure that she had not closed her ink pot but she couldn't be arsed about that at that moment. As she was about to get up from her chair, she felt a hand on her upper arm.
Regulus was looking at her with concern laced in his gaze, "Are you alright?"
"Yeah, yeah I am fine. I should go," Emmeline made a vague hand gesture towards the door and then she ran.
She ran like hell.
Away from the library. Away from all the confusing feelings that had suddenly taken residence in her heart.
Away from Regulus.
To be continued...

Oh my gods this took me three bloody hours and 2 cups of ice cream. It wasn't even that hard to write but I didn't want to make it into a one shot so I was trying not to over share anything other than whatever was related to that incident and Emmy's feelings.
I hope you liked it!
