"It's the second time this year we've moved, Mom... Where do you even get the money to keep doing this?" you asked, dragging your suitcase behind you with a huff.
"That’s not something you should be worrying about, dear," she cooed, not even looking up as she continued unpacking boxes with a serene smile.
"Right, because not knowing is totally comforting. How about you at least tell me if we’re moving again soon, so I don’t get too attached to this place?" you quipped, rolling your eyes, your voice dripping with sarcasm.
"I'm not planning on going anywhere anytime soon, Bug." She set down what she was holding and walked over to you, pulling you into a warm hug, pressing your face gently against her chest. "This is home now, I promise."
You sighed but allowed yourself to be smothered for a moment before she pulled away.
"I'm going upstairs to check out the rooms. You can finish unpacking these boxes, okay?" she said sweetly, planting a soft kiss on your forehead before heading up the stairs.
"Sure, it's not like I've unpacked more than half these boxes here," you muttered under your breath, earning a soft laugh from her as she disappeared upstairs.
-
You finished unpacking the downstairs boxes and began lugging the ones for upstairs, box by box. Passing by one of the rooms, you spotted your mom fast asleep on the bed, her face still drawn with worry lines even in sleep. You hovered for a second, softening, before grabbing a blanket from the box and covering her gently.
After quietly placing everything else in its proper place, you glanced at the time and realized she’d been asleep for a while. With a sigh, you headed to her door and knocked.
"Mom?" you called softly.
"Come in," she mumbled, still groggy, rubbing her eyes as she sat up.
"I finished unpacking, but we don’t have any groceries... and I don’t know my way around here... Thought maybe we could, I dunno, go together?" you asked, blushing slightly at the admission. It's not often you get to spend much time with your mother since she's almost always working.
She giggled, her laugh like the sound of tinkling bells. "Of course, sweetie. I’ll just take a quick shower and get dressed. You should too."
You nodded, heading off to your room to get ready.
-
"Y/N! Are you ready?" her voice floated up from downstairs.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm coming!" you called back, grabbing your phone and wallet before practically jogging down the stairs, your stomach growling audibly as you reached the bottom.
"Sounds like someone’s hungry," she teased, flashing you a bright smile as she linked her arm with yours.
"Fifteen minutes there, fifteen minutes back," you grumbled half-heartedly. "Let’s just hope I don’t pass out on the way."
As you walked toward the entrance of the supermarket, you noticed a guy hustling with a tall stack of boxes, quickly moving them out of everyone's way.
"Oh, what a hardworking boy!" your mom gushed, her voice dripping with sweetness.
The guy, clearly hearing her, blushed furiously. In his embarrassment, he tripped while carrying a single box, sending it flying… right onto an old lady.
You couldn’t help but burst out laughing at the sight. I mean, come on, who wouldn’t laugh? Right?
Your mom gave you a little nudge, trying not to laugh herself, and you both continued into the supermarket. You grabbed everything you needed, and after a quick check, Mom realized she had some extra cash. "I think I'll wander around a bit and maybe pick up something fun. I’ll meet you out front, Bug."
