The vanilla folder fell right onto my glass desk. I looked up to the eyes of my boss. The logo and company name embedded into the folder 'Stark Law Firm' was glistening in the light of my wall drowned in glass from the windows. The sun shined just perfectly during sunset and kept on the other side of the building the rest of the day. I let my hands fall from my keyboard to my boss, Tony Stark.
"You have been requested for this case. Congrats and... well good luck" He says before plopping in the chair my clients normally sit in.
"Why?" I ask while opening the folder to the order.
Jesus, that's messy.
"That's why" I guess my eyes went wide. I go back and forth between the papers.
"And they requested me?" I ask and he nods.
"You remember your first 'earth shattering case' a couple years ago?" he asks and I nod my head. The year I got out of Harvard. "Steve Rogers requested you for one of his associates." he says before looking to his digital watch.
"Gotta run but good luck. I know your the best but I don't think even I could cover that." Tony jokes before running out of my office.
I lean back in my leather rolling chair, taking a more thorough look at the case. Trying to maintain a summary.
James Buchanan Barnes accused of raping his ex-wife. Got divorced a year prior because of an affair on her side. I'm supposed to defend to James. And of course Dylan Crowder is her lawyer. All evidence she shows looks believable.
But that doesn't mean its the truth.
Before I can go to my emails to set up a meeting with James, Emma walks into my milky door.
Emma has been my friend since under-grad. We went to DePauw together but went to different law schools. She went Notre Dame and I went to Harvard. Her red hair was tied in a ponytail leaving her frizzes out. She had some goddess complexion everyone envied her about. I stopped being jealous after a few years of friendship. She became my closest friend and my co-worker after traveling the world with her fiancé, Luke. She fell into the seat Tony had sat in with two boxes of Chinese food. I look to the clock to see our usual dinner time, 8:30.
"Look at this Emmie" I say, handing her the file while I take the white to-go box out of her hand. As I drag the noodles, her eyes go from wide eyed to confusion as her thumb she ferociously licked turns the pages.
"Dang Kara, that shit is... well shit." She says while tossing the folder back onto my desk.
"I know" I say with noodles in my mouth.
"How was you case? Heard today was court day" she nods while biting into her crab rangoon.
"We won. Who honestly sues their kids teacher because she was teaching her 15 year old evolution?" She says while rolling her eyes. She's right though, who is that petty?
In the lawyer world, those are our Karen's. "Congrats though, I knew you had it in the bag the day I saw the case" I say while setting the box down to open the hundreds of emails I choose to ignore if not important. I emailed Steve Rogers after memorizing his email since we often keep in touch. He was incredibly nice and always checked up on me. Peggy, his wife has also become a nice acquaintance during his case. I typed out my welcoming and then requested James email. Sometimes the defendants contact information comes with the file but sometimes it doesn't.
"Now we wait" I say before turning back to my friend who was living in her own food coma. I laugh before pulling out my phone to take a quick photo.
"Okay Emma, take you and your food baby home for some rest. We have our long hours tomorrow" I say before she groans. I shut off my iMac and slide my MacBook in the pocket of my black backpack. I slide the phone in my suit jacket pocket and lift myself off from the chair. As we shut the lights off and walk out of my office we pick up a new conversation.
