"Mom, I want to stay for new years, but I have to go take care of some stuff for the case." I tell my mom, sitting on the porch in the middle of winter. She shakes her head and pats her warm hand that held a cup of coffee on my hand. "As long as you and James come to Easter, you're forgiven. Go ahead and pack your things." She says. She taps her hand on mine one last time before I stand to kiss her forehead and jog to the room.
I hate it when people ruin my vacations and holidays.
As I made it to the room, some quiet footsteps paddled after. "Kara, what's the matter?" Riley asked with her big blue eyes and luscious long hair twirling between her fingertips.
"I'm leaving early, Mommy and I have to talk." I say while packing my pajamas I had out for tonight.
"Are we going with?" Riley asked. Yet it sounded just like a plea.
"That's up to Daddy." The girl left faster than she came.
After packing most of my wardrobe, it didn't take much time for James to come into the room. "You're leaving now?"
"I have too." Turing around to see him with the look or confusion and heart break wasn't one I wanted to see. "You can come if you want."
He drags his and Riley's suit case out from underneath the bed and starts in the drawers. We pack in a heavy silence. The air carrie's our burdens were too stressed to say ourselves.
My mom walks in and out of the room, trying to offer help. My dad asks questions the I don't know the answers too yet. My little brother was trying to lure Riley out so we could focus on getting packed in time. My phone is blowing up from all of my coworkers, friends, and Rachel. God bless her. She was escorted out of her house by the cops and into a small safe house. Shes been only allowed to reach out to very few people. One of them being me.
"Dad, I love you. And because I love you, I'm going to ask so very politely that you let us pack. I swear to keep you updated but I have to pack and leave today. I love you so so much." I say with my hands on my hips and the softest smile I could forge out of the anxiety ridden in my bones a the moment.
He nods his head and comes to place a kiss on my forehead. I sigh from comfort and turn back to my suit case. James had already finnished his suitcase and is now working on Rileys. I roll the last pairs of jeans I had brought into a little pinwheel shape and shove them in the suicase as much as I can.
"Done." We say at the same time. We laugh at the timeliness and fall back into the stress.
"You going to be okay Kara?" He asks, running his hands up and down my upper arms.
I nod my head and let out a little breath. "Yeah. I just want all of this to be over with. And I want work to stop running my holidays."
He gives me a forced smile while his hands slowly fall to mine. He picks my left one up and kisses it. "I'll get the suitcases in the car. Go saybye to everyone."
I smile. "Thank you."
