This story is set in a completely different world than what we are living in now. In this world the merfolk is a very wanted species, because of their incredible powers. Mermen are incredibly strong, have highly increased senses and the power of the sea. Mermaids have the ability to heal, to hypnotize people and also the power of the sea. Merfolk had to come up with a system to make sure they wouldn't become the humans' slaves. The mermaids would at all costs always stay under the 100 meters deep limit and rule the cities and the merman would defend them and make sure ships wouldn't get to close to the cities. Mermen are the ones with this task because their powers are more suitable for attack and the mermaids' power are better for defense. Because mermen are allowed to go above the 100 meters limit, they often get captured. When it's high season every time a group goes up, they either don't come back at all or they don't all come back. This has made the value of merman very low since every human has already seen one by now. Mermaids on the other hand (who are far more useful for humans then mermen) haven't been seen by a human in years.
