"Julius," Mira's eyes beamed. "They are so cute."
She was relaxed into him, her head resting on his chest. Julius' nose picked the vanilla scents off of Mira's hair, relaxing his nerves as they embark on this journey.
"You've become so attached," he said staring down at the pictures of the kids from the orphanage in the album Mira was holding on her lap. "At this rate, you will know all of their names and stories before we make the journey there."
"Is that too bad a thing?" Mira's eyes scrunched up in a little frown before dissipating into a huge smile again as she looked up at him for a split second. She obviously can't resist looking through the pictures.
"Not at all," Julius kissed the top of her head. "I'm just saying."
They were seated in the back of the car, on a ride to The Julius Asher Smith's Foundation. In case you don't know, the foundation is the non-profit organization Julius founded after he recovered from the ghastly car accident a few years back to support children and teenagers who have been displaced or orphaned and handicapped, whatever the case may be.
Julius thought of how he suddenly became the owner of such a big foundation. He never once thought he would do something of that magnitude.
But life had a different plan for him and helping children was part of that plan because, for one thing, he has come to believe in fate a lot more than necessary. After all, he has never really believed in the concept of fate.
It took him an accident and memory loss to start believing.
Fate and coincidences were the things that have brought him this far and made him who he is now. The same goes for Mira.
That same fate was what brought two little creatures into his life although in the most tragic way since they were involved in that accident with him.
Scratch that...with them.
Thanks to his parents who had kept the children safe until he finally woke up and was healthy enough to find out about them.
And then after so much thought, he approached his parents one day and told them of his intention of establishing a shelter and haven for children and teenagers.
His parents were more than ecstatic at the idea so when he finally proposed it, they spot-on supported him and even got things in motion to start the foundation.
At first, it felt as though he was taking responsibility for the lives he had wrecked in that accident a few years ago. The kids were an eye-opener for him about how fleeting a man's life can be and he felt sorry for causing them the pain of growing up without their parents because of his reckless act.
The first few months were terrible as he couldn't bring himself to look at the children when they were still under the care of his parents. Even after he started the orphanage, his conscience beat him.
He was angry at himself, still is, that he is the reason why their parents were taken away from them so early. It was difficult to look them in the eye even though he knew that one day, the time will come when he has to tell them how they died.
But in the meantime, he would keep showing them love, and also work alongside the foundation's members and staff to fill the vacuum and give all the children under their care the hope to keep living for something no matter how hard it may seem.
He looked out the window for a brief moment before looking back at Mira who was still flipping through the album.
He loved that he could tell the way her eyes lit up at the sight of those children even with her face hidden from his sight. He could also feel how much in awe and love with children she is even before finally meeting them.
