Chapter 1—Where We Left Off
I had a massive headache.
I could barely remember what happened.
Where was I?
I rubbed my forehead before slowly opening my eyes.
I was startled when a familiar face came into view, and a deep voice spoke.
“Finally, you’re awake.”
I sat up and stared at Master Circo.
Memories of the recent events flooded my mind.
“What am I doing here? What happened to the others?” I questioned.
“Your precious gem, Don, is in a cage across the hallway. Your best friend and your lover are in chains down in the basement.”
“Let them go!” I shouted and lunged at him.
But of course, vampires and their super reflexes always have to win.
He waved his hand, and flew backwards through the air.
I landed on the ground with a thud, which added even more pain to my present headache.
“Stupid half-ling. I thought you knew better than to fight with a vampire, the head vampire nonetheless.”
“You have no pity,” I stated. “You have no heart. You have no soul.”
“Of course not, idiot. I’m a vampire. What else do you expect?”
“Mitrik’s not like you. My father isn’t like you.”
“Well, Mitrik got sucked into the feelings of the human world. Your father, on the other hand, was an insolent partner. I thought I could trust him, but now he’s guarded 24/7 until he learns to cooperate.”
“What happened to the others? Where’s the rest of the Ash Clan?”
“I control them. They listen to me, Hazel. And I suggest you do the same.”
I took a deep breath. “Gia and Livia…what happened to them? They would never agree to this.”
“They agreed to this years ago. Who do you think was keeping tabs on you?”
“Are you trying to say that—”
Master Circo smirked.
“Yes, Hazel, Gia and Livia betrayed you. They have always worked for me, and they always will. They’re the ones I sent to watch over you and Don. They’re the ones who kept me updated on your whereabouts. They’re the ones who made it possible for me to capture you once again.”
“Master Circo, what do you want with us?”
“Isn’t it obvious? I thought Mitrik explained it to you already.”
“He said that you wanted to kill me and Don. If you really wanted us killed, then you would’ve done it already.”
“Hmm, that is quite true,” he admitted. “You see, Hazel, I’ve been thinking of a plan to stop giving our sacrifices so much freedom.”
“What do you mean?”
“We give sacrifices too much of a choice. We treat them like they’re super special by having their future vampire lover shower them with gifts and kisses and what not. It sickens me. Vampires and humans are not meant to reproduce. Half-lings are not normal. You and your daughter are not normal. You were never meant to walk the Earth among the humans.”
