I looked up from my book to peer behind me at the boy who had been watching me over my shoulder. He grinned lopsidedly at me.

"Hey! Watcha reading?"

I blinked, no one ever talked to me. I liked it that way.

"None of your business." I huffed, turning back to my book. He frowned.

"Talk about a bad attitude." He muttered. Then he strode away without glancing back.

Joel's POV

"There, I tried." I said glaring at Jimmy.

"And failed, spectacularly." He retorted.

"If you don't follow through with the dare I'll tell everyone you like her." Scott added, grinning mischievously. I groaned running a hand through my hair, what a stupid game.

Lizzie POV

I sat next to the tree on the hill sketching a landscape. I loved it here, just the silent wind, beautiful scenery, and the light scratching of my pencil on paper.

"Hey." I heard a voice call from up in the tree. I bit off a shriek and looked up. The boy from earlier was lounging in one of the lower branches, twirling willow branches between his fingers.

"How long have you been up there?" I demanded. I felt slightly uncomfortable that he'd been watching me this entire time.

"About two minutes." He shrugged. I mentally chided myself for not seeing him.

"Bye." I said abruptly, standing up to leave. I really shouldn't talk to strangers.

"Wait!" He called after me. I turned around confused, what was this kid's obsession with me. "Come sit with me! The views really nice from up here!"

"What?" I stared at him dumbfounded. Who does he think he is? Randomly wanting to talk to someone he never payed attention to before. He patted the spot next to him.

"Come on!" I sighed and picked my way among the thick roots. He grinned as I scooted towards him. I look around, he was right the view was spectacular from up here. I turned to look at him. "Waddaya think?" He beamed.

"Its beautiful." I breathed. He opened his mouth as if he was going to say something but stopped himself. "Why did you want to talk to me earlier?" I asked.

"Well, you looked lonely and I now what it feels like to be alone, so I wanted to cheer you up." He admitted quietly. I grinned at him.

"Thanks."I whispered. "Lets be friends so that neither of us are alone again." His eyes widened and his cheeks flushed pink. When he look up at me, I was surprised to find them open and trusting.

"Sure, it was nice to meet you Lizzie." He held out his hand for me to shake. I took it.

"That reminds me, I don't know your name." I mused.

"Joel, my names Joel." He said.

"Pleasure to meet you Joel." I beamed. He blushed.
