 Chapter 4: Bound by Vows

Luna paced back and forth in her room, her thoughts swirling in a storm of frustration and confusion. The engagement had been a political move, nothing more. A way for her father to solidify his power, a chess piece moved on a board that didn't even belong to her. She hated the idea of being married off to Jungkook, a man she barely knew and certainly didn't trust.

She stopped near the window, staring out at the sprawling grounds of the estate, trying to calm the fire in her chest. The sound of footsteps approaching her door snapped her out of her thoughts. She straightened, taking a deep breath. He was here.

"Don't knock, I'm not expecting company," Luna muttered, barely loud enough for the door to hear.

The door swung open anyway, and Jungkook stepped inside, a confident smirk tugging at his lips. His presence in her space—her territory—only added to the pressure mounting in her chest. He knew it, too. He could sense her discomfort, and that seemed to amuse him more than anything else.

"Busy already?" Jungkook's voice was smooth, carrying the mockery she was all too familiar with. "I was hoping we could talk about a few things."

"Like what? The way you decided to make my life a living hell today?" Luna shot back, her voice cutting through the air like a knife. "Or how you've managed to completely ruin whatever little semblance of control I had left?"

He stepped further into the room, closing the door behind him, and leaned against it casually, as if her rage was something he could savor. "Is it really that bad? You've been engaged for what—an hour? And already you're acting like it's the end of the world."

"You don't get it, do you?" Luna's hands balled into fists at her sides, her patience worn thin. "This engagement isn't some trivial matter to me. It's not just a line on a piece of paper. My father's using me as leverage, and you're too damn comfortable playing along."

Jungkook raised an eyebrow, his eyes glinting with that familiar calculating gaze. "You're too dramatic, Moretti. A marriage is a marriage. The game is always the same, no matter who's playing."

Luna stepped closer, anger flickering in her eyes like wildfire. "You think I'm dramatic? You've known from the start that I didn't want this. But here you are, playing your part, smiling like this is some big victory. You're nothing but a pawn, just like the rest of us."

Jungkook's smirk never faltered. "Funny, because you're not exactly a queen yourself. More like a knight—useful, but expendable."

The sting of his words hit harder than she'd expected, but Luna refused to show weakness. "Is that your way of impressing me? Insulting me and hoping I'll fall for it?"

"No," Jungkook said, his voice suddenly softer, a thread of sincerity creeping in. "It's just the truth. You're loyal to your father. I get that. But loyalty only takes you so far in a world like this."

Luna didn't flinch, even as the air between them thickened. "So, what? I'm supposed to abandon my principles just because you don't think they're practical?"

"Not abandon. Adapt," Jungkook countered, stepping forward, closing the distance between them. "You'll find that the sooner you adapt, the less painful it'll be."

Luna's eyes locked onto his, her anger boiling beneath the surface. "And you're so sure of that, aren't you?"

Jungkook leaned in slightly, the space between them so small that she could feel the heat radiating off him. "It's not about being sure. It's about survival. And we both know that's what this is about. You and me, we're both fighting to survive in this world. This marriage is just the beginning."

The way his words landed made Luna hesitate, if only for a split second. She wanted to argue, to strike back, but something in his tone made her pause. His voice had lost some of its mockery, replaced by a cold, calculated determination. It reminded her of the truth she tried to ignore: survival was the only thing that mattered now.

"You're right," Luna said, her voice sharper than ever, "but I'm not about to let you control me. Not now, not ever."

Jungkook chuckled, but there was no warmth in it, just the echo of a man used to getting his way. "Control?" he repeated, as if the word were foreign to him. "This isn't about control. It's about who holds the power. And right now, that's me."

Luna clenched her jaw, unwilling to back down. "We'll see about that."

The tension between them crackled, heavy and thick like an impending storm. Neither one of them moved, both locked in a battle of wills. Jungkook's gaze never left her, and for a moment, the distance between them felt far too close.

Then, with a quick motion, he reached out and took her hand, pulling it toward him. "You know, I could almost respect you," he said, his voice low, almost teasing. "If you didn't hate me so much."

Luna jerked her hand away. "Don't flatter yourself."

"Flattery's not my style," Jungkook replied smoothly, his gaze never leaving hers. "But I will admit this—your resolve is something to admire. It's what will make you interesting in this little game we're playing."

Luna turned her back to him, crossing her arms tightly across her chest. "Well, don't get too comfortable, Jungkook. I'm not here to entertain you."

Jungkook took a step closer again, his tone now more dangerous, the playful edge replaced with something more serious. "You don't have to entertain me, Luna. I just want you to survive. Because whether you like it or not, we're in this together now. And if you don't start seeing it that way, we both lose."

The weight of his words sank in, but Luna refused to acknowledge it. "I'll make my own way," she said stubbornly, her voice resolute. "I don't need you."

"We'll see," Jungkook murmured, almost to himself, as if considering something much bigger than just the moment between them.

As he left the room, Luna couldn't shake the feeling that this was just the beginning. She didn't trust Jungkook, nor did she want to. But there was something undeniable in his eyes—a challenge that she couldn't ignore. Whether she liked it or not, she had been dragged into his game, and she wasn't sure how long she could keep playing by her own rules.
