This part takes place in Insurgent when Tris is helping the little girl get free
I am playing hide-and-seek with the Divergent, but I'm not the only person who's "it."And then it happens. I step on a Candor girl's pinkie, and her face twitches. Just a little-an impressive attempt at concealing the pain-but enough to catch my attention.
I look over my shoulder to see if anyone is near me, but they have all moved on from this central hallway. I check for the nearest stairwells-there's one just ten feet away, down a side hallway to my right. I crouch next to the girl's head.
" Hey, kid," I say as quietly as I can. "It's okay. I'm not one of them."
Her eyes open, just a little
"There's a staircase about three yards away," I say. "I'll tell you when no one is watching, and then you have to run, understand?"
She nods.
I stand and turn is slow circle. A Dauntless traitor to my left is looking away, nudging a limp Dauntless with her foot. Two Dauntless traitors behind me are laughing about something. One in front of me starts walking down the hallway, away from me.
"Now," I say.
The girl gets up and sprints toward the door to the stairwell. I watch her until the door clicks shut, and see my reflection in one of the windows. But I'm not alone in a hallway of sleeping people, like I thought. Eric is standing behind me.
* * * * *
I look at his reflection, and he looks back at me. I could make a break for it. If I move fast enough, he might not have the presence of mind to grab me. But I know, even as the idea occures to me, I won't be able to outrun him. And I won't be able to shoot him, because I didn't bring a gun.
I spin around, and bring my elbow up as I do, and thrust it toward Eric's face. It catches the end of his chin, but not hard enough to do any damage. He grabs both my arms and spins me around so my back is touching his chest. I wiggle around and try to break free from his grasp, but its no use, he is stronger the me.
"Stop moving," He whisper directly in my ear which sends chills up my spine. I stop.
"Listen to me, and listen good. If you want to be alive by morning you'll do exactly as I say, got it?"
"Wait, why are you helping me?" I ask very confused.
"No time for questions, they'll be awnsered later, but you promise to do as I say?" He asks.
I think about it, trust the guy who I thought was part of the Dauntless traitors, or probably loose my life trying to escape.
"Okay, I promise." I really hope he is telling the truth.
" I'm going to bring you to where the other Divergent a are being held, but you have to make it look like I'm not on your side, okay."he says.
"Okay," And that's all I say. He leades me to an elevator full of other people they have captured. He shoves me down to my knees, next to the Candor lady I saw earlier. She and four others sit between two rows of elevators, kept in place by Dauntless traitors.
One of the elevator doors open, and a Dauntless traitor Uriah, whose lips are stained with blood, toward the short row of the Divergent. Eric stands at the other end looking at his watch.
I hear foot steps and turn to see who's they are. My heart drops. Its max.
"Seven, nice," he glances at me and stops, "and I see we gave our main girl, too." I freeze. She is looking for me in particular
"So, as most of us know, the brain stops developing at the age of twenty-five." He walks over to the boy to my left.
"Therefore your Divergence is not completely develpoed."
He lifts his gun and fires.
I close my eyes and hear multiple gunshots, but I'm too afraid too look.
I open my eyes to see the Dauntless guardes along with Max dead on the floor. Eric is bent down next to the little girl, that was next to the little boy who was shot. He has I knife in hand cutting the ropes around her hands and helping her up. Uriah is completely dumbfounded at the fact Eric has just saved our lives. Tobias and more loyal Dauntless run into the room. Tobias's eyes land on Eric and he rases his gun. Before I know what I'm doing both me and Uriah stand up to get infront of him.
"He just saved our lives and prevented the murder of the rest of us, he's on our side," Uriah says.
