(In the depths of space, a purple star is floating above a glass-like platform, gazing into a ball of pure energy. The star was stubby, not pointed very well, and surrounded by a cosmic aura.)
(The star turned around, and saw a fat man flying toward him. This man was considered a legend among the stars, known for saving the cosmos more than once. This man had blue overalls, a red cap and shirt, and a big mustache. There was no mistaking it, the legendary Mario had appeared at last.)
???: ahh, glad to see you finally showed up. I've been expecting you, Mario
Mario: ...
???: You never were much of a talker, am I right? You protagonists are all the same.
Mario: ...
???: Let me guess, you want your friends back?
Mario: Yeah!
???: Well, if the great Mario says so, then here!
(The platform started to rumble, as 10 strange crystals rose from the sides of the circular platform. Mario looked around and glanced inside of one of the crystals and saw a figure inside.)
Mario: ?
???: Pretty clever, right? I gathered every threat to my power in one easy-to-destroy circle!
Mario: !
???: Oh, relax, I'm not gonna kill them, they have a use to me.
Mario: ?
???: Ever hear of a cosmic clone? I can easily make a cosmic clone of anyone, using just some cosmic energy. Then, I can easily trap any threat and harvest their cosmic energy.
Mario: ?
???: Every threat but you, Mario.
Mario: ???
???: Even if I trapped you, you'd escape anyway. After all, you're Super Mario! So, yeah, I'm just gonna kill you.
Mario: !
???: Oh, I forgot! The name's Lumba, but it's a shame you'll never hear it again since, well, the whole "dying" thing.
(Mario tried to run away, but was held in place by a weird, purple, starry energy. This must've been the cosmic energy Lumba was talking about. Once Mario was held in place, Lumba started readying a large star bit.)
Lumba: Nothing personal, dude. Just wanna rule the galaxy.
(That was the last thing Mario heard before a loud dinging noise of the star bit's impact.)
(Just like that, the greatest warrior in the galaxy was reduced to stardust...)

???: Hello, can you hear me?
(The soft voice echoed through his mind.)
???: Must I speak louder?
(He mumbled a bit this time, better.)
???: WAKE UP!
(This time he jolted awake, shocked at how quickly the voice got so loud.)
???: Good, you're awake.
(He looked over and saw a stubby yellow star with black eyes talking to him.)
???: So, what's your name?
(He thought about it a bit, but then remembered his name.)
Garry: Garry.
???: That name sounds dumb for a goomba.
(A smile came over the star for a split second.)
???: What happened to you? Did you not watch the Super Mario Brothers Super Show?
(At the sound of her own joke, she started laughing wildly until she was on the floor.)
???: So-Sorry about that, sometimes I crack myself up.
Pexy: Anyway, the name's Pexy.
Garry: Oh, my name is weird.
Pexy: So, I bet you're wondering what you're doing here, am I right?
Garry: I thought it was because of the fact that I'm dead.
Pexy: you aren't dead.
Garry: What?
Pexy: how do you get that confused?
Garry: Look, my head is kinda fuzzy right now, so if I could just rest for a bit, that would be great.
Pexy: Fine, you can rest while I tell you.
(Garry sat down.)
Pexy: My mom's been captured. Normally, she would rely on the great, powerful, handsome Mario...
(Pexy started to feel her thoughts drift, until Garry brought her back into focus with a noise of disgust.)
Pexy: But, Mario's gone missing, and mom told me that he wouldn't come back.
Garry: Did he die?
Pexy: I hope not...
(Pexy and Garry sat in silence for a bit, as that grim thought entered their minds.)
Pexy: Anyway, you've been turned into a goomba in order to save the galaxy!
Garry: Wait, I wasn't always a goomba? What was I before?
Pexy: I have no frickin clue.
Garry: Well, I guess I gotta go do my job. How do I save the galaxy?
Pexy: I'll explain once we're down there.
Garry: Wait, down where?
Pexy: The Mushroom Kingdom!
(And with a flash, they disappeared from the void.)
