My One and Only [ Short Story]

TEN

Raising his babies, Nigel loved fatherhood, it became a personality for him. He had help, their grandparents; grandma and grandpa Hill, Chadwick and Ichika.

But they wouldn't stay babies forever, soon he was teaching them to drive, then sending them off to college, then walking his daughter Briar down the aisle.
He taught his children almost everything he knew, he schooled them on how their mother was, it was as if they knew her.

Nigel kept his promise, he lived on, but he only had Liz as his one and only wife.
Throughout his life, Bob kept a journal, in it, he wrote in great detail on how he and Liz met,their first date, when he asked to be his girlfriend.
He wrote how he messed up and cheated on her and how hard the task was to win her back, but once he did, he vowed to never do so again, he asked her to marry him.

He described their small intimate wedding, how he felt seeing her in that beautiful white dress.

Nigel wrote every detail about how he felt when she left him and for the first time he wrote and spoke about meeting her again in his journal and the promise she asked him to keep while they thought he was in coma.

And finally the journey of raising their children, holding his first, second and third grandchild and also being the last surviving member of the quad.

Many years passed and an old Nigel Elric laid in the hospital, his children all grown up, started their families, they all loved him. There was a picture of his entire family with his kids and their spouses and children. Also there was a picture of the original four; Chadwick his oldest and best friend, Ichika whom he met through Chad and she became his best friend and Elizabeth Hill, the cute girl his eye caught in the restaurant and she became his wife.

Nigel smiled and was very happy he knew everybody and the life he lived, he had fulfilled his promise and at any time he will be ready to go.

On the day after his 80th birthday, after a cute party with his family in his hospital room he saw everyone for the last time and felt glad.

"Lizzie? I think I'll see you soon".

At dawn of the following day Nigel Elric finally crossed the bridge,his spirit rose from his body and he was like his young self again.
His family was called to the hospital; they all cried for him as the nurses covered his face with the white sheets.

Nigel stood in the corner of the room feeling sad and wanted to hug each and of them and let them know that he was okay.
He watched as they pushed his old and frail body which was no more out of the room.
His family were packing up the room, removing his things.

But a familiar came to him,
"You did well Nigel"

Nigel looked and could not believe his eyes "Lizzie?"

She smiled as she ran to hug him "I kept my promise Nigel, I waited for you"

He cried tears of joy "Oh Liz!"
He pecked her jaw
"Look Liz, our family" she was truly proud of their children. Liz blew kisses to them to help with their grief and suddenly, they weren't in pain anymore, they missed their father, but they knew he was happy to go home to reunite with their mother.

"I love a lot more today" Elizabeth expressed
"But less than tomorrow?" Nigel chuckled and asked
Elizabeth laughed " Yes tomorrow I'll love you more"
"And I love you Liz, always will be my My heart"
Elizabeth kissed him first but this time it was right on the lips where she longed.

Nigel held her hand and they both ran off together, smiling and just as in love as they were into the light disappearing.

Nigel's body was buried beside his wife, after his wake and many had left Noah found his dad's journal, an old book with a purple cover and a butterfly imprint.

"Dad's journal, I should read this to the others"
And so he did, he read it to his wife, his sister and brother inlaw, it was so emotional that they cried happy tears.

Lucas, Briar's husband thought it was so great it had to be shared
"Such a beautiful love story, it must be shared with the world"

They all agreed.

Noah wrote the last entry into the diary from his point of view. He wrote of their father's last days on Earth and how they believed he had finally gone home to their mother for a long overdue reunion.
And Noah was right, he has gone home finally with his wife.

Noah sent it to a publishing house, and even though it was said, it was not expected.
It was successful, The journal was published and titled My One and Only with their wedding photo as the cover.
Nigel and Liz's story was well received and loved all throughout the world.
Nigel Elric became known as the world's most devoted husband. He never took off his wedding ring, he wore both wedding bands around his neck everyday attaching it to gold chain. He never batted his eyes to glance at any other woman romantically, nor did he ever thought twice about staying true to Liz.
One might thought he was miserable and not healthy living and he only did this to suppress his grief.
No, he was very much fulfilling his promise to live happily, he just saw Liz as his one and only and Indeed Elizabeth was just that to him and he was to her.
