The first day went by in a blur. Following breakfast the group of five traveled together from class to class. All the classes were basically the same that first day despite their different subjects. Each teacher welcomed the class, introduced the subject and went over fundamentals, assigning reading so that they would understand the theory of the class. Their first class was charms with the Ravenclaws. Professor Ernie Macmillain seemed like a nice guy as he explained what they'd be studying and the purpose of charms. He also bragged a bit, saying that he'd begun teaching not long after the Battle of Hogwarts when the previous professor, Flitwick, had retired.

Following Charms was History of magic. At first the class was exciting as none of them had anticipated having a ghost for a teacher but his droning soon had everyone in a near comatose state as he talked about the history of Hogwarts. As they trudged out of that class, again with the Ravenclaws, Lynx found herself walking near Dominique. The Weasley gave her a little half smile before hurrying off to join some other Ravenclaws and Lynx walked with the other Slytherins to lunch, trying to wake up.

Thankfully lunch served to wake them up because Transfiguration was next. The teacher, professor Padma Patil, started the class by transfiguring a desk into an ox and then back. They were all excited to start transfiguring the furniture and she exchanged excited looks with Sami and the boys before professor Patil ruined it by talking about theory. After that she had them attempt to transfigure a match into a needle but no one was able to make any difference to the match by the end of class.

The last class of the day, Herbology, was easily the most fun. Sure they had to hear about theory and uses for herbology, but at least they got to be outside in the greenhouse. The whole place smelled of fertilizer and dirt, and as professor Longbottom talked Lynx couldn't keep herself from looking around at the different plants and wondering what they did.

The group ate together, talking about what that day had brought for them. They were all tired, and it had been difficult to pay attention when all the teachers seemed to say the same things; hopefully the second class would be better. After dinner the guys split off, saying that there were a few things they wanted to check out. Sami and Lynx both had been wanting to see the library, so taking their textbooks with, they ventured off in search of it.

The library was found off a corridor of the first floor, and it was massive. Both girls grinned, looking about at the tens of thousands of books, and then went to sit at one of the tables and read. They managed to make it through their charms and history of magic reading assignments, the history of magic being much more interesting to read about than to listen to, before the library closed at eight. Both jumped as they were told to leave, not realizing that it was so late and knowing that they were late for curfew. The two rushed down the stairs into the dungeons, trying to find the blank wall that led to their common room, but in their hurry they couldn't seem to find it.

"The first day and you're already late - why am I not surprised?" An amused voice came from behind them, making them both jump and spin around. Professor Nott stood there, arms crossed across his chest, giving them a stern look. Lynx crossed her arms as well, frowning up at the person she'd usually call 'uncle Nott' or Mr. Nott.'

"We lost track of time at the library."

"Yeah, and then we couldn't find the common room." Samantha added, also giving him a look.

The man sighed, shaking his head as he turned to go down a different passage.

"It's this way." The two girls grinned at each other. "I figured the two of you would cause trouble - this isn't nearly as bad as I imagined it'd be."
