The next morning, I was actually up on time to go to school for once. I had gotten up on time, eaten breakfast, changed clothes, brushed my teeth, and done everything else I needed to do, so all I had to do was wait for Adam and Luke to pick me up for school. Adam and Luke were supposed to pick me up for school at 7:45, but the time came and went, and no Adam or Luke. I actually waited until 8am for them to show up, but nobody came, that is, until about 20 minutes after the 8:00 hour, when there was a knock at the door.
My mom had off that day, but because she had a full plate on her, she still couldn't take me to school. I went to the door to answer it, and it was Adam's mom! She looked worried to death, so I of course let her in, where my mom came out to talk to her. She was almost out of her mind to where she was almost crying. I asked her what happened, and what she told me, I almost couldn't believe.
"I don't know where Adam is! I woke up this morning to get him up for school, and he was gone! I went outside, no truck in the driveway. I called his cell phone, he has it turned off! I tried calling Luke, he said Adam never showed up at his house either, so he had to ride the bus to school. My husband and I took his car keys from him last night because he mouthed off to me, but we forgot he has two sets of keys, one of which he always kept hidden from us, so he could escape us if he wanted to." Adam's mom said.
"You mean he's not what he seems?" I asked.
"Trust me Mike, there's a lot about Adam you don't know sweetie, he's not the goodie two shoes he pretends to be at school." Adam's mom said.
"I have a feeling I know where he may be going, but if he left here for the airport to go to Arizona to be with his deadbeat uncle, he's already probably left the airport by now on his plane. I knew he saved up money to fly if he really wanted to get away from us, but I never imagined he'd do it." Adam's mom added, "His uncle's a deadbeat who would never make him do what he didn't want to, and I know his uncle is still like that. Trying to motivate him is like trying to get a snail to go fast."
After a little bit, Adam's mom tried to call her brother, aka Adam's uncle, to see if he was there. Her brother answered by telling her, that he wasn't there, and even if he was, he wasn't about to tell someone as bossy as she was, then he hung up on her. She tried to call her brother back, but he blocked her number, so that was the end of that.
I took a shot at calling Adam's cell phone, but it was still turned off, so his mom gave me the number to his uncle's, so when I called, his uncle answered, but when I asked if he was there, I sort of got to talk to Adam.
"Adam, what are you doing in Arizona?!" I asked.
"That Mike is none of your business! Goodbye forever!" *click!*
And just like that, my friendship and any other kind of closeness I had with Adam was completely over. Luke called my cell phone to apologize to me about not being able to pick me up for school, but I couldn't be mad at him, because it wasn't his fault. Adam's mom, nor his dad, could figure out why such a harmless punishment, one that he'd dealt with before numerous times, got so blown out of proportion, but they would find out that Adam was gone, never to return back home.
My mom ended up having to call the bus company, to get me back on the bus so I could go back to school on Monday, it was a Friday when Adam flew the coop, so I had an unexpected three day weekend. Three days would pass, and the bus, who by now had a brand new driver, would come pick me up for school on Monday, only when I would get there, two things would happen, Adam would become public enemy #1 of the entire school, and Luke, would introduce me to someone new, whom I had not only never met, but I'd never even seen him before.
Despite having never seen or met this guy before, Luke knew what he was doing when he introduced me to him.
