Reen Stared down at Fort Windsor located on the Dorrin and Roran border, he was to lead the rear of the army as they headed home, as the war was now over. Suddenly on his left he heard the whistle of his war horse Kamari.
When he didn't answer her call the first time, she whistled again. Knowing something was up Reen immediately turned around, sword in hand only to see a little girl about eight staring at him.
Her white nightgown was tattered, and covered in dried blood, her brown hair was dried with clumps of blood, and there were three fresh claw marks on her right cheek. Her blue eyes stared into his. "Are you going to kill me sir?" she said. He put his sword away. Her face was thin, along with her body. It was obvious she was Dorrinain. Her Tan skin and sharp features gave her away as one.
He bent down to the girl's level, which was not easy for a man his size. Her green eyes gazed into his chestnut ones. She looked away from him, and he grabbed her hand."No child" Reen said barely above a whisper. "Where is your family, child?" she looked into his eyes and started to cry.
"They're dead sir" she whispered. Before Reen could question her farther the king rode over to him. He turned back to the girl, but she vanished.
"Ho! General Danson! What are you doing on the ground?" He got up and smiled at the king, his childhood companion.
"Well your highness to be honest there was a child here, a little girl about seven or eight, she disappeared. I'm worried about her, I think she came from the village that was attacked near here." Only her night gown was that of no commoner Reen thought.
The king frowned at him. "They say this forest is filled with the spirits of the dead, Reen." He said sadly. "I wouldn't pay any attention to her." He kicked his white stallion, Mar, and rode off.
Reen frowned. Spirits of the dead? she seemed real. Reen heard the call to move out, so he got on Kamari and started to ride. it was a long wet ride, and it didn't help he was the rear guard. Reen shook his head, the king probably was just trying to scare him like old times. Reen was so lost in thought that he almost didn't see the little girl in front of Kamari.
He stopped Kamari in her tracks and turned to the little girl he barley recognized because she was now covered in mud head to toe. "Whats your name child?" he asked her. she looked up at him and smiled.
"My name is Kree." she said. she still hadn't moved from her spot crouched in the mud. Reen held his hand out to her and offered her something no one else would offer to a little orphaned Dorrian, especially since they were from Roran, and the people from Dorrin were now to poor.
"Why dont you come live with me. The war's over, and you need somewhere to go." Kree gave him a small smile, but there was doubt in her eyes smile she didnt trust him but there was no other option. Reen didnt blame her. He wouldnt trust an enemy General either.
"Well" she said jokingly, "I dont see any better offers, so sure" she took a hold of his hand and he helped her get onto Kamari. "Goodbye" she whispered into the forest before she fell asleep on the horses back.
