I stare at the boy, who reminds me startlingly like James. He stares back at me, as if he was daring me to answer. Now, if he asked a question, shouldn't he expect an answer?
"My name is Raidne. I am a Siren." I say plainly, gliding back to the shoreline, heaving myself onto one of the rocks. I watch as his eyes flicker over to my tail, and he inhales sharply. Discreetly, he shuffles back, but I noticed. However, there was nothing I could have said without scaring him any further.
"S-siren?" He stuttered, his eyes fixed on my tail. I smirk slightly and swish it, causing him to jump back in shock, as if he was surprised my tail moves. Are humans this stupid nowadays?
"Yes. And you, human? What is your name?" I demand harshly. He locks his gaze with mine, fear melting away. His eyes hardens and the previous frightened expressions on his face is painted over with a stoic expression. He stands up, wobbling a bit, and storms over to me. I stay put, lifting my chin to look at him in the eye as he approaches. He is just a human. I can deal with him. He cannot take me.
"Garrett. My name is Garrett." He snaps. What is the matter with him? Considering that he had not died because of me, he sure is in a foul mood. Again, are all humans like this? I would not remember. It has been a while since I had made any type of contact with humans.
"It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Garrett." I say politely but he snorts and turns away. I feel a bubble of frustration fill me up, and my scales flare a inky colour, before returning to their original state. I smooth out my hair in an attempt to calm down. No matter, correct? If worse comes to worse, I can always... dispose of him if I needed to.
But there was a part of me that protested angrily whenever my brain reached any conclusion close to that. Maybe it was the fact that he was the first human I have had the pleasure of making contact with for years. Maybe it was the fact that he was a boy. Maybe it was the fact that he looked too much like James. Maybe it was all three.
I jump back into the water, gliding away silently from the human. I hear shuffling - a telltale sign that he was turning around. However, I did not look back. Must not seem too desperate.
"Where're you going?" He calls out. Smirking, I turn back to face him.
"I cannot have you dying." I say simply and wade out. Garrett didn't make any move to leave. Once I swim past the mouth of the cave, I duck my head under the water. Underwater, everything seems to be better. The water blocks out everything, makes you forget the troubles that you're facing.
It was dark, the sunlight barely piercing through the top layer. Everything was tinted a murky green, thanks to the rotting kelp. I dive to the bottom, eyes scanning the seabed for any signs of life. Anything that Garrett could eat. I had to feed him, no? Or else he would die. And I would have to dispose of his body. It would be like killing James.
A low scuttling resonates from my left, and my ears perk at the sound. A rusty coloured crab crawls out of the kelp and scuttles across the sand, poking at some dead mussels. With no time to waste, I lunge onto it, grabbing it and swimming to the top. I burst out of the water and glide to the cave, trying to keep the little crab from plopping back into the water. Once inside, I crack the crab in half, ending its pathetic life.
"Garrett!" I call, leaning by the shore. I had no clue where he was currently, for he wasn't in my sight. "Garrett! I have food."
I believe that the word 'food' is like a trigger for humans, because Garrett came running out from the stalagmites and skids to a stop. He eyes the crab in front of me and cocks and eyebrow.
"I'm not eating raw crab." He says simply, sitting down. I throw it at him and it falls into his lap.
"Eat it or die." I say and leave the cave. I need food too. But I think one crab may not be enough for Garrett. I'll see what I can find along the way.
A/N: A really short filler chapter! Sorry for the eternal wait! :)
