      A NORMAL DAY: CHAPTER ONE

     Ricky Bowen

-

"Ricky!" I jerk up in fright, only to see the horrendous sight of Mr. Jefferson. "This is the second time in a week that you've fallen asleep." I glance back and forth between Mr. Jefferson and the clock.

I notice the numbers reading 'eleven-twenty five,' meaning there should only be, what, 5 minutes left?

I shift my focus back over to the fuming teacher standing directly in front of me. "Yeah, sorry, it won't happen again." I mouth quickly, my eyes moving around the room in embarrassment.

"I know it won't, because if so you will have to stay in detention." Mr. Jefferson says before turning and stomping back to his desk.

"Damn, looks like you managed to piss off the teacher in just the first three weeks." Big Red laughs beside me.

"Shut up." I hurry out checking the time once again. '11:29'.

I pack my things in a rush right before the bell rings, throwing notebooks and pencils in my backpack. "Ah, ah, I didn't say you could leave yet." silence. "You aren't excused until I excuse you, finish your last problem then we will go down." What the fuck?

After Mr. Jefferson let us go, finally. I stand up walking out of the crowded classroom. As I make my way down the halls, full of high school cliches.

Last year, I joined the theater club, at first it was just to get Nini back. I know I'm stupid. But now, I quite like it, well other than that dumbass EJ Caswell. Whatever. Anyways, I don't like Nini anymore, well not like that anyways. I actually have a crush on Gina right now. It's not like a huge one just a bit.

I make my way over to the cafeteria, walking past the many, many crowds of groups.

My eyes trace the room, searching for my friends. Then my eyes glance upon a girl with long brown hair, falling into a high ponytail, Nini. I strode over to the circular table, taking a seat next to my best friend, Big Red.

"Hey Ricky, anyways as I was saying, my favorite Taylor song is definitely 22," Nini explains.

My attention shifts as I lose interest in the conversation.

*

"Alright, maybe it's a tad bit rude but I honestly am not very interested in talking about Taylor Swift right now," Ricky says to the camera and pauses. "Wait, Nini don't be mad at me, I love Taylor!"

"You better!" Nini yells while walking off in the background

*

I focus on my food, stabbing at the salad below me. "Ricky, what about you?" I hear Gina ask. I furrow my eyebrows. "What about me?" I ask, obviously not listening to the conversation before. "What grade did you get on the physics test?"

"Oh um, a C," I state, lacking confidence. "Damn, that sucks, Nini and I got B's." She tells me. "Cool," I answer. "What's up with you today?" Gina asks with worry lacing off her tone. "I'm just tired, I only got three hours of sleep last night," I explain to her.

I hadn't really got tired last night, I had all these thoughts crossing my head. About my parent's divorce, about my crush on Gina, if I still liked Nini, I was just thinking about anything and everything.

"But enough about me, Nini I know it's your birthday tomorrow." I express with excitement. "Oh, yeah, me too." I hear EJ mumble, probably jealous even though they had broken up like two weeks ago.
