Hermione looked at herself in the mirror. "I look good today." She thought, and she did. Her uniform was newly pressed and wrinkle-free. Her hair was curled and loose, and flounced around her shoulders. Her makeup was done to perfection; her beautiful brown eyes were highlighted by lengthening mascara and winged eyeliner and her face was a perfect shade of tan. She was honestly surprised at herself for working so hard on her appearance, but she had good reason to: it was her first day back at school since the Battle of Hogwarts. Most of her friends had decided not to return to school, but, always being the goody two shoes, she decided to finish her 7th year. Besides, she had reason to be excited, because she would be in the same grade as her best friend, Ginny. Hermione was completely ready to begin her new year, but one tiny thought nagged at the back of her mind. Okay, a big thought. A huge, important, attention-demanding thought. It picked away at her common sense until she couldn't think about anything else. "What about Ron?"
~~~~~
After the Battle, Hermione and Ron had admitted their feelings for each other, and they became inseparable. They spent the entire summer together, and we were happy as bugs in a rug. However, Ron wasn't returning to Hogwarts. When Hermione found out, it was no surprise; Ron had never much cared for school. Her main fear was that she and Ron would grow apart. "What if he becomes unhappy with visits only every other week in Hogsmeade? What if something happens and I'm not there to help? What if he meets someone else? " The list went on and on. Her biggest fear though, was her own feelings. She did not trust herself to keep from falling in love at Hogwarts. But Hermione put her worries aside, because Ginny would be there to help her through it. Plus, if she didn't hurry, she was going to be late for the train.
~~~~~
Hermione arrived at Kings Cross Station with her bags just before the train was set to leave. "Thank God for apparating." She thought. Hermione rushed at the post between platforms 9 and 10 and arrived at Platform 9 3/4 right as the train was starting to steam up. She was running for the train doors when she heard someone call her name. "Hermione!" She turned and saw a flash of red hair on the other side of the platform. "Ginny!" Hermione called, running to her. Suddenly, though, she stopped. "Ginny, where is your trunk?" Ginny looked at Hermione, anxiety and guilt in her eyes. "I... I'm not going back to Hogwarts, Hermione. You see..." Ginny started to explain herself, but Hermione cut her off. "You're what? But we agreed that we were going to go back together!" "I know Hermione!" Ginny yelled, causing many people to turn their heads and stare. "I know we agreed, but I can't! I tried to contact you, but Errol got lost again, and..." "But why?" Hermione screeched. "I... I can't tell you." Ginny sobbed, wiping her face with her hands. "Fine." Hermione stated, gaining a stony composure. "Good bye then. See you at Christmas, Ginny." With that, Hermione spun on her heel, climbed onto the train, and sat down in a compartment alone.
