The First Day

Hermione lay in bed, thinking. After the Sorting, she had mumbled an excuse and rushed upstairs to the comfort of her familiar four-poster. She had been upstairs, lying on her bed, for almost an hour, yet no one had come to the dorm. "Good." She thought. "I could use some time to think." And she did. She thought about Ginny and Ron and how crazy the last 24 hours had been. "It's odd how I woke up this morning in my house, in my old bed, not knowing Ginny's decision, and not knowing Verra's fate. Or Verra at all. Wow, that's really weird." She realized. "I literally have known Verra for less than a day, and she already seems like my best friend." The thought that nagged at the back of Hermione's head the most, however, was Verra's placement. "The Sorting Hat can see inside your head, can know your feelings and intentions and secrets. What is Verra hiding, or is she really hiding anything at all? Maybe I'm reading into this too much. Not all Slytherins are evil, right? Sure, some of them are deceitful and sly and wicked..." Hermione started to roll into her own internal monologue of the undesirable Slytherin qualities when she stopped herself. "...But that's not the point. Not all Slytherins are evil. Not all Slytherins are evil. Not all Slytherins are evil..." And Hermione repeated it to herself over and over again until she fell asleep.

The next morning, Hermione hopped out of bed, excited for the start of the first day. "It's my last first day." She realized quietly to herself. "So I should make the best of it." Hermione dressed in her new robes, recently pressed, and her shinest shoes. She straightened her hair, which literally took 5 seconds. "Thank goodness for magic, or else hair styling would take me hours!" Then, Hermione put on a little more than her makeup, and checked her appearance in the mirror. "I look ready." She said. "I am ready." She grabbed her books, headed out of her dorm and into the massive hallways of the school.

Hermione was glad she had her class schedule memorized. She was surrounded by swarms of tiny first years, noses buried in parchment, slam into each other in the chaos. Hermione had actually had a few near-collisions herself, but she had managed to redirect herself in time. Mostly, though, she was nervous. Her first class was double potions with Slytherin, and she was nervous about seeing Verra. Her worries were washed away, though, when she heard a name calling her in the hallway. "Hermione! Wait up!" Hermione turned, and was greeted by Verra, stumbling through the sea of wizards to get to her. Hermione's face stretched into a huge grin as Verra, red-faced from the exertion, trotted over. "Are you excited for the new year?" Verra bubbled. "Yeah!" Hermione replied. "Especially because I didn't lose you."
