"Just one last stitch Danny, then you're good to go." Anna stated.
"You're an angel in disguise Nurse Anna, I swear you are." Danny Whizzbang replied, while exhaling a deep breath he had been holding in since Anna started tending to his wounds.
Anna was a nurse, who got conscripted to France, to take part in the war effort. She was the best nurse in London, and as soon as she heard nurses were to be drafted out to the war, she knew she would be amongst the first women picked.
Anna had seen the horrors of the war, just as much, if not more, than the soldiers themselves.
She had hundreds of men die at the work of her hands, but in saying this she put on a brave face everytime a new man entered her miniscule medical tent, and she promised them she would do everything she could to save their life.
A couple of weeks prior Anna had been stationed with a tunneling division in France. Mostly the division was made up of Englishmen, majority of them from Birmingham.
"And the last stitch is done, let me just get some gauze to wrap around your arm to prevent infection, and you are offcially free Danny..." Anna said with a slight laugh, to try and lighten the mood.
"You know Anna, I used to dread coming to this tent before you arrived. The pits of hell is what we used to call this place. It was nearly worse in here, than down there..." Danny said referencing to the tunnels they dug.
"But ever since you showed up, everythings changed. Hell, some men have a smile on their face when they get injured, just becase they get to come up here." Danny said, meaning every word wholeheartedly.
"Oh Danny come on now don't be silly, I'm just a nurse, doing my job, just like every one of you men." Anna replied, not wanting to take any of Danny's compliments.
"No, no seriously Anna, you give us chumps a little glimmer of normality, thank you for that, really really, thank you." Danny said with a warm smile, he kissed Anna on the cheek and trudged out of the tent, and prepared himself to re-emerge back into the world of war.
Anna tidied up the tent and let Danny's words sink in, she appreciated Danny's words, those men were just as much of a comfort to her as she was to them. They all treated her with respect and acted chivalrously, for the most part.
Anna was deep in thought when suddenly a new casualty burst through the front of her tent.
"Ah Thomas, back again eh?" Anna said.
"Wouldn't be a normal day, if I didn't come in here, would it Anna?" Tommy said with his mischevious grin, that he rarely showed.
Anna had met Tommy the first day she was stationed there. He took a shine to her straight away, because no matter what she knew about the gruesome killings, and horrible things he had done and been through, she always treated him like a normal man. That's all Tommy wanted to be, A Normal Man.
Anna grabbed Tommy's arm and pulled him towards a chair and sat him down.
"What is it this time?" Anna questioned with a warm smile.
Tommy lifted his shirt up, revealing a nasty stab wound. Anna helped him to lift the shirt all the way over his head, and placed the shirt on the bed beside them.
She began to inspect the wound, and Tommy flinched slightly as she gently poked and prodded around the wound. The cut was deep and was bleeding heavily, Anna applied some cloth to the wound.
"Keep your hand firmly pressed against this, while i get my stitching kit ready." Anna ordered.
Tommy nodded slightly not saying a word.
"What happened?" Anna asked tenderly.
Tommy's eyes darkened and his head sank a little, as he recalled the recent events.
Anna's eyes surveyed Tommy as he sat in the tent, he was covered in bruises, mud and small cuts. Out of all the times Tommy had visited her since she arrived, he had never looked as bad as today.
When Tommy didn't reply Anna understood, she usually refrained from talking about the soldiers tribulations in the tunnels, as they treated her tent as a sort of safe haven, a place where they could forget about the war. But she cared for Tommy, after spending so much time with him, and she couldn't help but ask.
"I understand if you'd rather not talk about it, Thomas.." she said softly.
Tommy didn't reply and Anna got her stitching kit and began to work on Tommy.
After a while of sitting in silence while Anna stitched away, Tommy cleared his throat and said,
"We got ambushed..."
"One of my friends from home... he died." He continued.
Tommy contiued to tell Anna all about the horrors he endured in the tunnels, and she didn't speak, not once. She just listened and stitched.
Tommy appreciated this and he spilled his guts to the woman who he had only met weeks prior.
By the time Tommy had finished speaking, Anna was done stitching him up.
"Feels good to get it all off you chest, doesn't it?" Anna said
"Yeah...yeah it does." Tommy said, with a slight genuine smile creeping across his face, something Anna had yet to see.
Anna put the finishing touches on Tommys wound and gave him his shirt back.
"Okay looks like your all done Tommy." She said as she packed away her kit, just as she began to turn around, Tommy gently grabbed her wrist and spun her back around towards him, he looked deeply into her eyes, trying to search for sometinhing.
"Thank you Anna." He said sincerely.
"Thank you for fixing me up and listening to me." He said with a warm smile.
Tommy continued to study her face and once he got the answer he was looking for he leaned in and placed a soft kiss on her lips.
The kiss was short and sweet, Tommy pulled away and began to walk out of the tent, just before he left he turned around and said,
"See you soon, Anna," with a cheeky wink, he turned around and left.
Anna stood in the tent unable to speak, after what had just happened.
A kiss on the cheek from Danny, and a kiss on the lips from Tommy, what a day it had been indeed.....
