The sound of an alarm woke me up in the morning. "Ugh." I groaned. I flipped over in my bed, tossing the sheets from my body and slammed the alarm's snooze button."Jo? You up now?" my mother called from downstairs.
I mumbled a reply before dragging myself out of bed.
At age twenty-four, I was still living with my mum and dad. My university wasn't far, so it was a nice arrangement. "Morning." my dad mumbled from behind his daily paper. I gave him a nod as I made my morning tea.
"Going out to the library today?" mum asked.
"Yeah, I told Clara I'd meet her there today." I said as I stuffed a muffin in my mouth. "Oh, that Clara. She's lovely." dad waved his hand from behind his paper. I gave him a thumbs up as I put my tea in a cup. I made my way to the table with my second muffin and began to drink my tea.
"Josie, your professor called earlier." mum began. I looked up at her as I ate my muffin. "He wants you to come in next week and help a new teacher with the class." As I finished my muffin, I nodded a reply, "Hm, alright."
"I already said yes for you, so I'm glad you're okay with it." mum sat down with her coffee. "Right. I'll be off now." I stood up from the table and made my way to the door. "Forgetting something, love?" dad called. He held up my bag, shaking it lightly. I rushed over with a chuckle, "Heh, thanks." I kissed his forehead. "I'll be back later." I said as I walked out the door.
I walked down the streets of Brighton taking in the autumn air. It was early October and quite rainy. The library was close by, so I never minded walking down a few blocks in the rain.
"Josie!" a familiar voice called out. In front of me, a short, brown haired girl ran up to me. "Come on, let's get inside." she ushered me in. "Clara! How long were you waiting?" I asked as I shook off my umbrella. "Oh, not that long don't worry." she said, shaking off her own umbrella.
We walked into the library and skimmed the books. "What has the professor have for you next week?" Clara asked me. "Oh, just some more assistant work. How 'bout you?" I turned to her. She looked back to me, "I'm off this week, so I just asked for extensions on my projects." she smiled.
"You're off this week? How come?" I asked. "Oh, I took a baby sitting job." she said as she grabbed a book from an upper shelf.
She chuckled, "I'm only in it for the wi-fi." she whispered. I scoffed, "Right."
A few hours later, Clara was off to go babysit. "It was nice studying with you. I'll call you later?" Clara said as she packed her books. "Sounds lovely. See you!" I waved. She waved back before walking out of the library.
I continued back in my studies, flipping from page to page trying to finish my research that was due in the morning. After some time, I had finished the work. I closed my book and packed my things, then I was off. I decided to go to a nearby shop to get some tea. As I walked in, a man stood in front of me. His sharp jawline caught my attention. "And so, I can do this." he said to me, taking his tweed jacket off. But as soon as he said it, he walked off like nothing happened.
After placing my order, I sat down at a window seat. The rain poured, but occasionally lightened. "I'll have to leave when it lightens again." I mumbled to myself. I sipped on my tea as time passed by. By 3p.m I was out of the shop and on my way home. The rain had stopped for the time being, so I took the opportunity.
As I got home, Clara called. "Hey Clara. How's the babysitting?" I answered, holding the phone to my ear while I unlocked my door. "It's really not that bad, Jo. Ah, give me a mo, I'm locked out of the wi-fi. Angie?" she called out. "It's rycbar123." a young girl called back. "Oh, how am I supposed to remember that." Clara mumbled.
