It was a day like any other. Wake up. Get ready for school. Scarf down her go to breakfast of lightly salted avocado on toast. Head out. Nothing to it. She backed out of the driveway and turned onto the main road. Just as Katarina felt the turbo kick in, she saw something on the side of the road. She braked, panicked. With a blur it was gone. Whatever it was. Another deer? It couldn't have been. Maybe someone's dog or something. Who knows? She didn't have time for investigative work; she'd leave that to her father. Kat had more on her mind: Derrick LaGrange.
All they did was talk last night. She didn't commit any crimes, although she felt criminal for it. Katarina was mostly upset because she never got to the reason why she originally texted him: To uncover what he has been up to.
Burden with a tinge of guilt, admittedly she did enjoy talking to him.
It was now lunchtime and Katarina walked into the cafeteria. She got in line and looked at the menu choices for the day, albeit more interested in her table, she peered over and saw Kayla sitting there alone.
"Next...next!" Shouted the lunch lady.
"Sorry," Kay apologized.
"What'll it be sweetie?" asked the lunch lady.
Stuck with the choices of a pork chop, or mystery slop she took the chop; an easier task than what she was about to do.
"Hey Kat."
"What's up girl?"
"Another day in paradise," Kayla sarcastically responded.
"Paradise, prison, they're the same thing, right?"
Joking aside, Katarina could tell something was a little off.
They both sat there poking at their pork chops.
Kat built up the courage to say something. "He-"
"Ka-" they cut each other off,
"Kay-"
"Kat," they sat there in silence for a second.
"Kat, I just wanted to apologize for yesterday."
Slightly confused, Katarina thought that she should be the one apologizing, even though Kayla didn't know she talked to Derrick last night.
"I know you aren't supposed to use your phone during your internship, I guess it had just been a while since we really talked about anything," although that is what Kayla said, she was actually apologizing for thinking that her best friend was screwing around with her boyfriend. "I don't want to get you in trouble, you actually have something going for you."
"No, it's fine. Really."
"What were you saying though?"
"I was just going to say how it's crazy we're seniors now," avoiding the subject.
"I know," Kayla said, rolling her eyes. "As if life wasn't crazy enough."
They both looked over and saw Derrick making his way over to the table, suave as ever.
"Hey pretty lady," he said, squeezing Kayla's shoulder. "Hey Kat," he said without prompting. "You ready to go?" he questioned, his attention back at Kayla. They normally ate in the bleachers by the practice field.
"Yeah," she replied looking suspiciously at Katarina.
"I don't know," mouthed Kat, shrugging.
It was out of the ordinary. If it isn't Kayla or football, Derrick usually didn't give it the light of day. As if Kayla's suspicions needed any more ammunition.
