the prologue.

The embers of the fire created an orange hue around the area, the forest was quiet and calm, not a ghoul in sight, the smell of burning wood and fresh air filled the area. All that could be heard was the nice soft breeze and the cracking noise of the wood-burning around the fire. The group laughed around the fire the first time they could remain kids without any anxiety from the world around them.

October kept his head down stifling a laugh as he listened to the radio, Foxen was next to them also listening is nothing but static. The white noise could almost put the two to sleep. "Tobi there's nothing here, it's been static for days, this thing is useless." October rolled their eyes and turned back to the radio.

"Have some faith for once, Foxy." October ridiculed and put emphasis on the nickname knowing Foxen hadn't liked it, particularly leaving October's lips.

The radio played but nothing but more static than complete silence, October slammed his hand down on the wooden table next to the radio almost making it fall over if Amaya hadn't caught it from the other side of the table. "Ok yeah, no this isn't going to work." October accepted defeat which wasn't something they did often.

"Testing. Testing." The old radio reported coming out as a glitchy mess you could barely understand it but this caused the whole group to go silent, it was the first-ever thing they've heard since they got the radio first another person they knew was alive. They all swarmed around the radio, "Safe haven for all over the mountain roads of Maryland." That was repeated plenty of times through the radio, Foxen quickly wrote it down on his notepad and stuffed it into his pocket. "You'll see the signs." That was the last thing the radio said before it shut off, going back to static.

"I told you this would work!" October exclaimed excitedly pointing at Foxen.

"You're gonna attract ghouls," Foxen warned, shushing October.

"I could care less about that there actual living people out there," Mila marveled beaming, October nodded.

"Well should we really go, I mean Maryland is across the country," Foxen added, discouraging the friends around him but everyone knew he was right.

"This is the first sign of hope we've had in a while, it could be good for us," Amaya said standing next to October who nodded in agreement.

"I agree."

"Tobi, you always agree with Amaya," Hattie sighed, rolling their eyes.

October's voice raised slightly, "What the hell does that mean?"

"Easy there tiger, just an observation."

"This is the first good news we've gotten in a while, we should take the chance," Mila expressed, it was most apparent why they would want this all she talked about was about a safe haven waiting for them and this was it.

"Not like we've got other places to go." Coco joked, everyone knew she had good intentions with her words but it didn't seem to come outright.

Foxen put his finger up suggesting he had something to say, "what if the ones who wanna go leave and the ones that don't stay?" Foxen suggested but everyone immediately disagreed in unison. "Damn, just a suggestion." Foxen looked down at his feet in embarrassment considering the immediate shut down of the idea.

It was pitch black out most of them couldn't see ten feet in front of them, luckily they had lanterns and a warm campfire. "Let's sleep on it, decide in the morning?" October proposed and everyone nodded walking towards the sleeping bags that were laid out in front of the still-burning campfire. "I'll be on watch first," October added, sitting back down on the bench.

"As long as you don't play that loud ass radio all night," Hattie complained, annoyed.

"Anything for the princess." October mocked.

Amaya sat down next to October watching the moon with them, "The stars are bigger tonight." Amaya noted whispering, October laughed softly and nodded. Before they could say anything more the familiar sound of someone snoring filled the quiet air causing October to groan in annoyance and Amaya giggled.

"It's less cloudy out."

"Do you really think we should go? To the safe haven, I mean."

"Do you?"

"I don't know, I don't want us to separate, I know that."

October sighed running fingers through his hair, "not sure if there will be many choices." Amaya nodded looking over at the group. The peaceful teenagers sleeping gathered around the campfire for warmth on the surprisingly cold June night.

"Can you guys shut up with your deep bullshit so I can sleep." Foxen whisper-yelled, making Amaya and October giggle.

"He's right, get some rest." Amaya nodded and got up off the cold bench.

"Goodnight Tobi."

"Night."
