Being 6, Theseus didn't know a lot about the world. But he did know that his family loved him, he loved them and Dads weren't supposed to leave every couple weeks only to come back tired and dishevelled. He knew that being king meant his father would be busy at times but every time his father smiled or laughed or joked, he saw the bags hanging from his eyes. His brothers noticed too, attempting to get the man to take a break. But with a kiss upon each princes' head, he would turn back to his study.
Despite this, Theseus felt he had a happy childhood. His family loved him, teaching him, protecting him, and helping him explore the world. That was until he was 11. His father had left on another trip, though this time leaving without a guard. The only sign of his disappearance he left were his crown and five letters. One for each prince, one for the kingdom, and one for the boys altogether.
The one for the kingdom was nothing unusual, just reassurance and a not of how the trip would be slightly longer than usual and the festival coming up should continue along as usual. For the three princes he said that when he returned, everything would change Everything would be better. That sparked Theseus's interest. If everything was better than maybe they could convince his father to look after himself. It was a shorter trip than usual too, only two weeks, meaning they could have the celebratory dinner they always have. He was excited, a dinner like that would mean delicious food and time with his brothers. His mood was instantly ruined when, upon his older brothers opening their letter, they burst into tears. Theseus decided he didn't want to be sad for the dinner and vowed to wait until his father came home to open it.
At exactly two weeks there was no sign of the king, not unexpected, he likely got distracted and back tracked. Nothing to worry about. At one month there was a slight worry in the air, he usually was off schedule by this much. Though his eldest brother assured everything was fine. He had been on a couple expeditions before and occasionally plans change, but even Theseus was able to tell he was slightly unsure.
There was a sacred rule that the if the ruler did not don his title or crown for a year then the role would be passed to the next in line. The eldest detested the idea of being a rule so young which confused Theseus. If he was the king, wouldn't he be as cool as their father? Isn't that what he wanted?
Once it hit the 3 month mark, excuses had stopped being made. The brothers had begun drifting away. They no longer hung out with Theseus as often, opting to take on hobbies instead. The eldest trained everyday, though they already were considered a prodigy, their skill only grew and soon were considered the best fighter in the kingdom. The second eldest turned to music, mastering instrument after instrument. Perfecting them. And finally, Theseus, who had grown weary of not being given answers, began throwing himself into his studies. If he knew everything then he would knew why his father left.
At the 6 month mark he ran. The eldest ran from the kingdom, unable to bear the pressure of king at only 18. That night Theseus cried with his remaining brother. They made promises. Promises to stay for each other, against all. At the 10 month mark, the promise remained strong. Theseus's brother hung out with him more, they spent Christmas together. Exchanging small trinkets they had made for each other.
This shattered at half way through the 11th month, this time with a note. One that simply said "I'm sorry". One that was blotched with tears yet made Theseus rage and sob at the same time. He had lost both his brothers. He was left alone to take the throne.
The day of his coronation Theseus met with his fathers most trusted adviser, who had been left in charge of the kingdom by the the-. Well Theseus didn't quite know what to call the man he had once called his father but he knew it would have to wait.
The adviser's name was Sam. Someone who cared for Theseus during the last year. Someone Theseus had decided deserved the tile of Father better. He may have been 12 but he wasn't oblivious to the fact this man had looked after him when he couldn't. He suggested that until Theseus was 16, he could continue looking after the kingdom. No impactful decisions would be made without him though of course. The only catch was that Theseus was to continue his studies and training. To this, he accepted
On the day of the coronation, people had gathered from across the kingdom to watch a young boy have a crown too big for him be placed open his head. A crown forged with gold, inlaid with sapphires, rubies and emeralds. A crown meant for someone twice his age. Yet a crown that now belonged to him. As he stood above the cheers of the crowd. He decided that he would need to have a lighter smaller one created for daily outings.
And as the cheers of an excited crowd grew, a letter collected dust in the corner of a room.
