Luke

“We’ll always support you Luke.”

“We’ll help you if you need help.”

“We love you Luke.”

Those were the three things that my band mates responded with when I came out. It was a difficult decision but according to Calum, a very brave one. I had been feeling differently for a little while now, although the lads hadn’t noticed.

Michael was always trying to force girls upon me at night clubs as he would for the other boys, but I just replied with, “I’m not really feeling up to it tonight,” or “She’s not really my type.” Just to get him off my back. It wasn’t until a few days ago I had realised that I am gay.

It’s something that is hard to say when you’re in the limelight as much as the lads and I are. I haven’t told anyone but my close family and my band. I’m not ready for that next step of everyone knowing.

“You coming man?” Michael’s voice brought me back to reality and I looked up to see all three of the lads stood by the door. I nodded and shoved my phone into the back pocket of my jeans, picking up my jacket in the process of getting to the door.

It was our good friend, Alex Gaskarth’s birthday and he was celebrating with some close friends and lots of alcohol.

The rest of the lads were busy in conversation while we drove to the venue, but I couldn’t help but worry. No one else at the party apart from us know I’m gay, and I want it to stay that way for a little while until I adjust.

Calum must’ve sensed my panic as he placed a hand on my shoulder and said, “It’ll be ok Luke, we’ll look after you.”

“What if they figure out?”

“Nothing will happen.”

“How can you be so sure?” I turned in my seat so my eyes met his.

“Just trust me ok?”

I nodded and he patted my shoulder. I knew Calum was right but I couldn’t help but worry as to how the night may go.

We soon arrived and I was surprised at how busy it was. When Alex said ‘close friends’, I didn’t realise how many close friends he actually had.

I get intimidated quite quickly, and as soon as we got out of the car and my eyes saw the chaos we were about to walk in to, I turned around and started walking away.

“You guys head on in, I’ll go.” I heard the voice of Ashton say as footsteps approached.
