Lucas
We stood at the door of the restaurant, our fingers gently grazed each other. Our adventure must end.
Maybe the sooner the better.
She dug in her pocket and found her keys and car in the parking lot. Her car was indeed not a clown car like mine, that leads me to wonder what happened with my car?
"So...I'll see you around?" We turned to each other. I let out a low chuckle.
"We do work together. Also, we're kind of married." She started laughing.
"Right. We'll talk later." I pulled her into a tight hug. I didn't want to let go and neither did she as she held onto me. She let go reluctantly, "Bye Lucas". She lightly waved at me and strutted to her car.
I sat down in front of the steering wheel. For a moment I looked around in the car, there was confetti on the passenger seat and in the back. I crawled into the backseat; I didn't find anything under the seats as I scavenged. Finally I popped the trunk. Honestly, I was expecting the worst; a body, stolen money, someone's pinkie toe. Something went down that is for sure.
It was mostly clean except for a stray G-string. Alright, I'll return that to Eve.
Maybe we did in fact not do something illegal.
On my way back home, I fiddled with the rings in my pocket. I guess this will have to be one dirty little secret we're going to have to keep. Even if I wanted to explain what happened, fact of the matter is, I can't.
What plagued me more on my way home was why would I get married again? Even as high as a kite, I wouldn't take it so lightly. And why would I marry Eve? Was it just more convenient or was there something more? Something must have happened.
There wasn't even a snippet of a memory.
I parked the minivan beside Todd's Prius. I miss my Lexus but right now, however, I just wanted to be home. That's a mystery for another day. Todd was in the kitchen from what I could hear. When I closed the front door behind me, the rustling in the kitchen stopped. He sauntered out of the kitchen and looked at me strangely, his swollen black eye was like a punch to the gut.
"Oh thank god! You're alive!" He slung his arms around me in a big bear hug.
"I was worried. Moreover really pissed."
"I missed you too, Todd. I am alive," I placed my bag on the floor and headed to the kitchen to grab something to eat. He studied me curiously.
"I'm really sorry about your eye, I don't remember anything."
"Before we get to that, you said something about getting married when you came here. What the hell happened? You were far gone by that time."
"That's the thing, I don't know. I remember leaving the barbeque and Eve offering me some of Uncle Ted's hooch. That is it."
"Hooch? What hooch are you talking about?" A frown between his eyebrows formed.
"The bottle you had in the back of the fridge."
"Uhh oh then I have some good news and bad news for you. It wasn't any type of moonshine." I swallowed hard. What did we drink?
"Wha...what was it?" He chuckled.
"It was vodka once long ago. It's a mix of different alcohols, sleeping pills, and I am suspecting unknown drugs."
"Why was it in your fridge?!"
"No one ever even wants to touch that stuff by the pure smell alone! But here you are. It came with the fridge which previously belonged to an alleged drug dealer. Not something you can return, so I just kept it. I know what is in it since I...tried it once with Sage."
"Was that the good or the bad news?"
"Both."
"I need to call my office, beg to keep my job, and call Eve back. We have things to discuss." That would've been nice to be warned about. Maybe that's my mistake for trusting anything that came out of his fridge.
I called the office and thankfully my secretary put in some vacation time for me. She explained something about me calling her about work and to submit some of the technical plans. Even not quite conscious I worry about work. That tracks.
I called Eve.
"Hello Lucas."
"Hey, I have a bit of news regarding our adventure. We didn't drink Uncle Ted's moonshine. It's a mix of alcohol and drugs supplied by a drug lord."
"What? Well that explains part of it. God, I was stupid."
"It's Todd's doing. At least, we were stupid together." She sighed deeply.
"I do have some news of my own. Good news."
"As long as it's not both good and bad news. I've had enough of that for the day."
"I made a few calls and found out that our marriage certificate is submitted and being processed. Technically we are married. But since we weren't in the right mindset, the annulment will be easy. "
"So, we got legally married under the influence of a drug dealer mix. How fun!" The sarcasm was basically dripping from my voice.
"It seems like it, Mr Peterson. " The way she said it made me tense up. I swallowed hard.
There was a moment of silence.
"I'm really sorry about this Lucas, I just...I'm sorry. I got you into this mess. I wanted an escape and dragged you into this."
"I'm not innocent in this. It takes two. I also wanted to escape life for a bit."
"To be honest, maybe that's just what we needed. An escape and unrestrained intimacy."
"If only we kept it that simple and not got married."
"Maybe but where would be the fun in that? We rebounded and we rebounded hard."
"Fun? Ha. I have an idea." I had a very good idea. Eve was onto something. For three days we used each other for fun, human touch. To fill our innermost needs and without it we spiralled. Unfortunately it also comes with a deep longing for more. I will admit, this mistake has been the most fun I've had in a long time and I missed seeing Eve.
"I think we have the same idea."
"And what would that be Mrs. Peterson?" If she could tease so could I. She grunted.
"Oh stop it! Let's be friends with benefits?" I nearly choked on my own spit.
That's forward but I was thinking the same thing. I didn't say anything yet.
"I mean we've been there and done that already. It's therapeutic and we both need it because apparently not being intimate for a year means we become animals and when we get the chance and pledge matrimony. We escape with each other instead of into the wild."
A year? Make that years in a loveless marriage. I thought about it for a second. I knew what I wanted.
"I don't hate the idea, but wouldn't it make this situation even weirder?"
"The drug dealer mix made it weirder. You're right, maybe it's a bad idea. I'm still in awe of what happened to us."
After everything that happened, how I missed Olivia and the thrill of having Eve around had me wondering.
"Let's do it."
"Are we sure?" She sounded a little shocked that I agreed.
"Yes I am."
Sure, why not? What else could go wrong?
