Emily's POV

I was really excited for school today. All my hatred for mornings? Gone, just like that, thanks to a simple text message from her this morning.

Alex 😳❤

7:01 – Don't be late for class. I feel like you should be here early.

Emily 💍

7:05 – Are you saying you miss me?

Alex 😳❤

7:06 – Could be. I feel like I want to see you, so I guess I miss you.

I went to school early, as she asked, and decided to sit on the sidewalk to wait for her. Just because I'm a sucker for her doesn't mean I don't still keep my annoying personality.

I saw her car pull up next to me. She got out, looked down at me, and I grinned like an idiot. She rolled her eyes but walked toward me anyway.

"Really, Emily?" she sighed. She took a napkin from her bag, spread it on the sidewalk, and, with a quick adjustment to her skirt, sat down beside me, crossing her legs in a way that could only be described as elegant.

Confirmed: She was the queen of England in a past life.

"Good morning, Alex," I bumped her shoulder with mine.

"I didn't say you could call me Alexandria, and now you're calling me Alex?" She rolled her eyes.

"You love it when I call you Alex. You can call me baby," I said, giggling.

"You're a baby," she deadpanned.

"I mean the pet name," I widened my eyes and slapped her knee.

"Please... why would I call you something that cheesy?" she scoffed.

"You're horrible," I mumbled under my breath.

She stood up, dusting herself off like her life depended on it.

"The things I do for you are ridiculous," she huffed and walked away. I giggled and ran after her.

"And what do you do for me, Alex?" I poked her cheek.

"What will I do or what did I do?" she smirked, giving me that look.

"You and your deep questions. Both, I guess," I shrugged.

"I've done everything I thought you wanted me to do... within my limited capabilities... and I'll do everything you ask of me," she turned to face me as she said the last part.

"Anything?" I raised an eyebrow.

She stepped closer and tucked my hair behind my ear. "Anything," she repeated.

"Give me an A in history," I giggled.

She glared at me, and her lips parted as she struggled to find words. "Emily!" she scolded me, and I couldn't help but laugh.

My phone buzzed, and I checked it without looking at the name. It was probably Cam, to be honest.

Unknown Number

7:35 – I heard from Gabriel the news. Finally, you're showing responsibility. I'll call you to dinner with your fiancé soon to discuss the arrangements.

I glanced at Alex. Her eyes were already on my screen. If it were anyone else, I'd probably be annoyed, but I was secretly relieved not to have to explain it to her.

"Is this your father?" she asked, grabbing my phone as if she was about to fight him through the screen.

I nodded, feeling the weight of the moment. Tears threatened to fill my eyes. I guess I always knew he wouldn't reach out or care. My focus when I decided to help Alex was on her—never on the consequences for me. Even though Cam had warned me.
