These are the ranks of the typical wolf pack, in order from most to least authority. Every rank can be challenged for their position (more info on that later).
Pack of Earth, Air, and Fire-
Alpha Pair: The rulers of the pack, the alphas are usually the strongest fighters and the best hunters the pack has to offer. The Alpha pair are usually the only wolves that are able to have pups, and the Alpha female's main responsibility is feeding them when they're very young. The Alpha male's main responsibility is defending the borders and the pack from threats. They and their young eat first.
Beta Pair: The second-in-commands, the betas are usually the best hunters and fighters after the alphas. The betas role is to enforce the will of the alpha and help them maintain control of the rest of the pack. If they do a good job, or the alpha pair is sterile, the beta pair will sometimes be allowed to have pups. They and their young eat second.
Shamans: The Shaman and their apprentice serve as spiritual advisers and healers to the alpha. The Shaman exists to make sure every pack follows the will of the Gods. They gather herbs in order to heal the injuries of their packmates. Although they are forbidden from hunting, if necessary they can use extremely powerful environmental magic that corresponds to their pack. They and their apprentice eat third.
Gammas: Wolves older than nine cycles(years) become Gammas. These wise and ancient wolves are storytellers who assist the Shaman by ensuring that Pack Law is being followed by their pack mates. Gammas also preserve history by passing down old stories to the next generation and memorizing new ones. They eat fourth.
Deltas: These wolves are in the middle of the pecking order. Their primary responsibility is to obey the alphas and betas while helping them hunt and protect the territory. Usually most wolves in the pack belong to this category. They eat fifth.
Epsilons: These wolves are pups who have grown up but are not yet ready to fully enter the pack. They become Epsilon at 6 moons old and adults at 12. Their main task is to learn from the other wolves on how to hunt and fight. They tend to be the most rebellious group. When they become full adults, they can choose to challenge a Delta for their position, become Omegas or become lone wolves. They eat sixth.
Omegas: These are the lowest ranking wolves in the pack. Their job is to hunt small prey for puppies and to help care for them, as well as running errands for the Shaman. Their other job is to entertain the other pack members with tricks and other performances. They tend to be picked on by the other wolves and are usually skinny and weak from eating last.
Pups: Pups are somewhat outside pack hierarchy at first, as their place has more to do with that of their parents. Alpha pups eat before anyone else in the clan, and Beta pups eat before their parents. The pups don't really have any job, they are just supposed to enjoy growing up. Pups older than four moons old are brought on hunts and taught how to kill small animals.
Pack of Lightning (these are in addition to the ranks above)-
High Alpha: The High Alpha is the ruler of the valley. He is descended from a long line of black wolves that have reigned for generations. The High Alpha is in charge of the other three Alphas, and it is his responsibility to mediate any conflicts and make sure they are following Pack Law. The High Alpha can only legally be challenged by his own firstborn son, and only that son can inherit his power. Eats first after Royal pups.
Augur: The Augur, also known as the High Shamaness, is the firstborn sister of the High Alpha and the leader of the other Shamans. They report to her and she works to make sure that the will of the Gods is being respected by the other packs and shamans. She offers the High Alpha her spiritual counsel, healing, and the protection of her fearsome lightning elemental magic. Eats after the Royal Pups.
Consort: The Consort is the wolf that the High Alpha picks as his wife. She typically has a black pelt to insure that his pups do too. Her job is to advise the High Alpha, raise his pups to be good leaders and to rule in the event of the untimely death of the High Alpha until his son is ready to take control. Eats first after Royal pups.
Enforcers: Enforcers serve as the High Alphas' Betas, but with the crucial difference that they can't legally challenge the High Alpha. Enforcers are supposed to lead Soldiers to enforce on the pack of Lightning and all other packs in the valley. Crossing an enforcer is very dangerous. They eat second after the High Alpha's family.
Sages: The Sages are wolves over nine cycles old in the High Alpha's court. They serve as advisors, giving him advice based on their long lives. They also collect stories from all over the four packs, and use the wisdom they gain from them to help the High Alpha make the right decisions. They eat third. Soldiers: Soldiers are like Deltas, but they are more focused on fighting than hunting. They obey the order of the Enforcers and fight with an absolute discipline. They spend much of their time training for their next fight. They eat fourth.
Cadets: Wolves older than 6 moons but younger than 12 in this pack are cadets. They are like Epsilon's, except their focus is on training to be better fighters. Absolute obedience from the soldiers is expected. They can become lone wolves, attendants or soldiers upon turning 12 moons without having to challenge a soldier. They eat fifth.
Attendants: The Attendants are glorified playmates for the royal pups. They must fetch food, make toys for and accompany the Royal Pups wherever they go. An Attendant is expected to give their life to protect a Royal Pup, and if they fail to do so, they are exiled. They eat last.
Royal Pups: The Royal Pups are pups born to the High Alpha and his consort. They live a life of ease, all wolves are expected to give them whatever they want except for their mother and the High Alpha. The Royal Pups are given the best toys and food the packs can provide. Usually, there are only 2 pups born in a litter. The firstborn son and daughter of the High Alpha become the next High Alpha and Augur respectively, and are not expected to become cadets and work their way through the ranks. They eat first.
Exiled Pack of Ice (these are in addition to the ranks above)-
Chiefs: The Chiefs are typically the strongest warriors, although sometimes they can just be the most cunning. Unlike a pack's alpha, their authority is not absolute and they must convince a majority of their pack to support a decision of theirs before they enact it. They can be challenged by anyone and eat at the same time as everyone.
Thanes: The Thanes are usually diplomatic wolves and good leaders. They organize raiders in units of four during battle. They also are tasked with presenting concerns and new ideas to the chief during pack discussions. They can be challenged by anyone and eat at the same time as everyone.
Raiders: Raiders are fearsome fighters, attacking swiftly and fleeing before you know what hit you. They can vote and raise concerns and give ideas to Thanes in pack meetings. They eat at the same time as everyone else.
Pups: Pups become Raiders at six moons old. Until then, their packmates and mother are busy teaching them to hunt and fight after they've been weaned. They can be present at pack meetings, but not vote.
