Trish was inside the cafe with Carrie.  Dan didn't exactly hate Carrie, and he enjoyed talking to her sometimes, but her constant chatter - mostly about her fiancé, which Dan didn't find particularly interesting at the best of times - was starting to get on his nerves when he was preoccupied thinking about Phil.  He was still wondering that morning, about the feeling of Phil's arms wrapped around him, of his laugh where his tongue poked out the side of his mouth which he would only do if he thought no-one was looking, how his cheeks would flush pink when he and Dan would lock eyes for a moment...

He wanted to get home and see him again.  He was anxious to leave, even if he was reluctant to not be able to see Trish for an entire week.  So he had excused himself and was stood outside, calling Phil and begging him to pick up.

"Hey, I'm not here right now, please leave a message after the RAWR!"

Dan rolled his eyes.  Phil never used to answer his phone, he remembered with a smile.  Then he remembered the conversation they'd had before he'd left, when Phil said he had to go to work today.  That explains why he's not answering, then, Dan thought, putting his phone back in his pocket and heading back inside into the warmth.

Carrie was grinning at him when he sat down again.  He shot her a questioning glance, and her grin widened.

"So come on, then, who's the lucky guy?"

    "What?!"

Carrie shook her head in mock disbelief.  "Don't pretend you don't know what I'm talking about.  Trish told me about the man who's moved in with you, and besides, you've seemed really distracted today.  So come on, who's your boyfriend?"

"I don't- I mean, we're not- he's just a friend," Dan spluttered, his tongue tripping over his words as heat rushed into his cheeks.  Carrie just smirked.

"Sure.  I was just wondering if you were going to bring him to the wedding, you know, since he's your boyfriend and everything..."

"Boyfriend?  I wish," he muttered under his breath, staring at his coffee, not expecting Carrie to hear.  Her surprised expression indicated otherwise, although she knew Dan enough to know not to force him to say anything else on the subject.

He said an unwilling goodbye to Trish, watching them leave before he left himself.  The drive home was tedious, and Dan was just looking forward to seeing Phil again.  He presumed that Phil would be home in a couple of hours, and trying to kill the time until then would be horrible.

He laughed at himself.  Look at me, counting down the minutes until he comes home.  How pathetic.  He doesn't even like me like that.  I doubt he even likes me at all.

Phil wasn't home.  Dan was sure he would be, by now.  A horrible, cold feeling grew in the pit of his stomach, but he pushed away his suspicions and picked up his phone.

Hey, when are you getting back? -Dan

Ten minutes.  Twenty minutes.  Half an hour.  No reply.

    Seriously where are you -Dan

    No reply.

You are coming back, right? -Dan

Phil, please don't tell me you went back to him -Dan

You could have at least said goodbye.  You could have at least told me.  I'm waiting for you like an idiot again, thinking you'll come back.  Hahah, yep, gullible Dan thinking you actually like me.  Stupid Dan, missing you every day for four years, thinking that you actually missed me too.  I should have learnt from the last time that I'm not even worth a goodbye.
