"I'm still not sure what feeling the folds means." Abi said, peeking open an eye. Fenrys had told her to sit on the ground and meditate for a few hours so that she would be able to feel the fold between the spaces they were in. Fenrys wasn't sure how else to explain it. He was understanding Lorcan's frustration with Abi because she had spoken every 5 minutes in the 4 hours they had been meditating.
"You just have to feel the space that you would move through to get to your target spot. Like if the world was a piece of paper and you folded it in half and stabbed a knife through it. You are the knife." Fenrys tapped Abi on the shoulder and demonstrated. Again. He had done this about 15 times since they started because he had never been a teacher and didn't know how else to get Abi to be able to do what he could.
It took him 10 years after the war to be able to use his power again. Maeve had damage the part of him that had been able to move through the world, by murdering his brother. The pain of even trying to use his power had thoroughly broken him, enough so that he thought he was never going to be able to do it again. But, one day, he had helped a boy get his brother out of being stuck under a wagon, and he felt it. The glow of the power within his body. After he had been thanked over 70 times by the little boys he had gone into a field and tried it. He looked into the space between the 2 places he had wanted to go and he flew through the air.
He just wished he could explain that feeling to Abi now.
"I am the knife." Abi whispered to herself then. And did it.
Fenrys and Lorcan just stared at the space which she was standing just a moment ago. Then they heard a squeal of delight. Fenrys turned his head to the left and saw her, the realest, biggest smile on her face. She was glowing with happiness.
"I think I get it now." She said over her giggles.
After that Lorcan and Fenrys had drawn out X's in the ground for her to be able to practice jumping from one spot to the next. They just stood there watching her, their heads following where she traveled.
"She's a fast learner." Lorcan said, almost proud, but more annoyed.
"How long did it take her to master your gift?" Fenrys turned his head to look at Lorcan. "3 hours." He grumbled back. Fenrys chuckled.
"You must have been so proud. Your new protege surpassing you in what? 2 days?" Lorcan turned his head to Fenrys then, giving him a look that meant pain if Fenrys said anymore. Which also meant that he was right.
A scream, and not one of delight tore through the air then.
Fenrys and Lorcan both turned to see Abi, her arm in the middle of a tree.
