Prologue
Shizuka Dojo Japan
1868, Edo Period
My eyes flew open as I sat up in my Futon and tried to catch my breath, A cold sweat had formed on my forehead but the Fusuma doors were still open revealing the beautiful river nearby the house. Once again the memory had decided to come back and haunt me.
My eyes widened as images flew across my vision, I gasped and clutched my chest tightly.
No, go away, just leave me alone. I mentally pleaded but the images refused to fade. A small girl sat on the ground with both of her small hands covering her mouth as she stared at the bodies of her parents lying in their own blood on the Tatami mat. The girls eyes reflected fear and sadness, she knew that these were her parents and that now they were dead there was no way to bring them back.
She was frozen in place.
"M-Mummy, D-Daddy?" She gasped just to see if they were still with her, still there just badly injured but she got no response. Some of their blood covered the walls but most of it was on the Tatami mats. The child let out a shriek of fear as she finally found the courage to scramble to her feet and run.
I closed my eyes for a long moment trying to get rid of the images but instead I let out a loud squeal, soon enough I heard somebodies footsteps hitting the Tatami mats throughout the house and suddenly my Fusuma door, that lead into the main part of the house flew open with a slam.
"Mizuko san!?" Master Hayashi breathlessly breathes. "Are you alright?" He asks after catching his breath and using the wall to support himself. I suddenly felt tears prick my eyes, suddenly escaping and falling onto my blanket.
"They appeared again." I barely whispered as I looked up at Hayashi Sensei with tears in my eyes, his mouth opened slightly in a frozen gasp but then he closed it, pressing his lips together.
"What appeared again?" he asked.
"The images." I whispered as I placed my hands over my face, covering it up so he didn't have to see it but soon enough I was pulled into his warm embrace, suddenly feeling safe once again.
"Do not worry, they are just pictures, they cannot harm you, you need to trust me with this Mizuko san." Hayashi sensei whispered calmly. I swallowed the lump that had formed in my throat and then nodded into his shoulder.
"Can you... Can you please stay with me just for a while longer? Just like this?" I whispered feeling slightly embarrassed but slightly hopeful at the same time. Hayashi sensei froze for a moment but then nodded.
"I can stay with you for as long as you like." He murmured into my dark hair.
"Thank you." I whispered before slowly drifting off into a deep sleep and letting the darkness consume me.
