Chapter 1
Mizu Village, Japan
1858, Edo Period.
I sat on my Zabuton at our Kotatsu as my mother handed me a small brown bowl with miso soup in it, she soon passed me my chopsticks and I placed my hands together.
"Thank you for this food." I said as I snapped my chopsticks in half and began to eat, my mother smiled at me warmly.
"How is it sweetie?" She asked kindly with a closed eye smile, I paused mid bite and then looked up at her with the ends of my chopsticks still in my mouth and returned the closed eye smile.
"It's yummy." I replied and began to eat again.
"It makes me so happy you like it sweetheart." My mother replied.
"Will Daddy be home soon?" I asked with my mouth full of food, trying not to allow any of it to dibble down my chin.
"Yes sweetheart, I believe he will be home tonight." My mother replied as she began to eat her own food. I had nearly finished my meal when I heard a knock on the Fusuma doors. I got to my feet and smiled at my mother. "I'll get it!" I called as I ran towards the door, my small feet making a tiny pitter patter on the Tatami mats.
I jumped down into the Genkan and slid open the big doors, revealing a small child, a little taller than me looking up with closed eyes and a small smile.
"Hello Mizuko chan." He greeted me. I returned his smile and then jumped at him giving him a big hug.
"Hi Naota kun." I giggled as I jumped around in circles happily, Naota laughed as he placed a hand on the top of my head and rubbed it.
"You're nearly as tall as me." Naota stated with a wider smile.
"Ya I know! One day I'll be much bigger than you Naota kun." I replied with another giggle as I reached for Naota's hand and guided him inside. "Come in, it's cold out here." I said gently tugging on his hand. He nodded and then followed me inside, slipping off his shoes and walking onto the small step that lead out of the Genkan. "Mummy Nao-Nao's here!" I called down the hallway, as I lead Naota towards the dining room, sliding open another one of the Fusuma doors.
