If I didn't know any better, I'd think we were looking for a dog.

"Emmy!" Mom calls and whistles out the car window.

"Mom?"

"Hm?

"She's not a puppy."

She sighs. "So tell me what happened again."

"I already told you everything I know," I say, getting frustrated.

"I just don't understand."

"That makes two of us."

——-

The next day Emmett comes to my house to talk to me.

"Do you think that her nightmares had anything to do with this?

"I'm pretty sure. She was acting strange that night before we went to bed. I'm kind of going crazy. I think I just need answers. I mean, who would take a six year old girl? She can't do anything. There has to be a reason."

Emmett wraps his arms around me in a hug, trying to calm my nerves. Only then do I realize I was shaking. How long have I been shaking? An hour? A day?

Mom walks into my room and sees us. She smiles and bites her lip. Emmett pulls away.

"Hey," say starts, "I'm making a snack for you guys. I just want to tell you it will be ready in a few minutes."

"Thank you, Mrs. Graves," Emmett answers. He always acts so polite to her. He truly is a gentleman.

Mom closes the door again and Emmett turns back to me. He grabs my hand.

I bite my lip to try and fight back the tears. I tarts shaking even harder. I can't help it. I start to cry. Emmett hugs me again. This time harder, more sure of himself.

"Soph, it's going to be okay, you know that."

"You don't get it," I say between short gasps of air, "Mom is acting like nothing happened. The only people in that room when Em got taken were me and her. I'm the only witness. No one gets it."

"I get it. I may not have been there, but I'm panicked too. I love Em too," he whispers in my ear.

When he does that, it gives me comfort. I feel like I'm in a alternate universe. Emmett, my best friend. Maybe more. I just don't know yet.

Mom comes in again. "Your guys' snacks are ready."

Emmett stands up and gives me his hand. We head to the kitchen where we eat our cheese and crackers.

I need to get out of this place, too many bad memories.

"Hey, do you think we could go to the park?" I say when we finish.

With the slight nod of his head, I know he knows what I feel right now.

——-

We are slowly swinging on the swings side by side when he asks me an odd question.

"When's Emmy's birthday?

"May 15th. Why?"

"I don't know. I'm thinking about all the little things that may have some significance. Never mind."

——-

We go back to his house around 6:30 pm, about when it's getting dark.

"Hi Mrs. Seyfreid."

"Hi, honey," she comes over and gives me a kiss on the cheek. I've known his family since I was five. They consider me part of the family.

"Sophia, would you like to stay for dinner? We have plenty."

"I would, thank you very much."

"Emmett told me about that sister of yours. That's unimaginable. I'm praying for you guys every night."

I don't know how to respond to that, so I don't.

——-

Even though I would like to sleep with my window open, I don't. I'm too scared. It takes me a long time to go to sleep. To get myself tired, I text Emmett. We just kind of chat about what not. Nothing really important.

——-

I don't know what time I fall asleep, but I know it's late. Like, early-late. I just wonder when I will be the next one to have nightmares.
