Chapter Four

I wake up from a light sleep to something strange. I can't place my finger on it, but something's not right. My clock says 2:17 am. Why am I up so early? There's no more sounds at the moment. I lay my head back down and shut my eyes again. Then suddenly something jostles my bed and I start hearing noises below me, getting louder. Emerald. My immediate first thought. Then I hear her scream, I hear her trying to fight back. This is not a dream anymore. Hands against faces, skin against skin. All the sounds of weaponless fighting. I look down, my heart beating a million beats per minute.

"Sophia!" Emmy screams at the top of her lungs.

"Emerald!" I scream back.

I hear two men giving orders back and forth to each other, but I can't make out what either of them are saying. I'm too focused on the tiny body they hold in their arms. The one that is wiggling around, trying to free it's self. Emerald.

I leap down from my top bunk, too much adrenaline in me to feel pain, I'm like a cat. One man goes out the fully opened window and the other throws Emerald out to him, then he leaves immediately too. They toss Emerald into the bed of their red pick up truck parked along the curb and speed away.

I'm on autopilot now. I'm in shock. Flashes come back from dad, from his passing. The same exact feeling yet completely different. I grab my phone from my desk and dial 9-1-1.

I tell them everything. My name, Em's name, two men, red pick up truck, all the details. They say they'll do what they can or, something like that. My heart is beating in my ears, I can barely hear anything.

I look around the room. Everything seems to be in place, nothing stolen. Only a few things knocked off of shelves and desks, I assume from all the commotion and Em's kicking.

The window, however, is another story. The screen is shredded to pieces and what was just a crack letting the breeze in is now fully opened. "Stupid, stupid, stupid." I mutter to myself.

In cases like this, I would cry. But I'm too in shock. Everything is happening so fast. I sit down, but it feels uncomfortable, so I stand right back up. Continuing my pacing.

-----

I'm in the kitchen trying to gulp down some water when Mom comes hobbling in.

"What the hell are you doing?" She grabs a glass from the cabinet and starts getting water too.

"Emerald got stolen."

"What?"

"We were sleeping, and then two guys came into our room a-and took her. I don't know where she is now. I called 911 though."

Mom drops her glass obviously surprised, shards scattering all over the floor.

"Get in the car," she says.

"Why? Where are we going?"

"Just get in the car!" She sound desperate.

I do as she says.

-----

We drive off. But I have no clue where we're going. I'm just along for the ride.
